A New Attack Capability for the Marine Corps
The United States Marine Corps has selected L3Harris as the winner of its Precision Attack Strike Munition (PASM) program, thereby securing a new armament capability for its AH-1Z helicopters. The contract, valued at $86.2 million, covers the delivery of an unspecified number of L3Harris’ „Red Wolf” weapon systems by the end of fiscal year 2027. The announcement was made on Friday by the Naval Air Systems Command (NavAir), marking a significant step in modernizing the Marine Corps’ aerial attack forces.
„Red Wolf”: A Long-Range Precision Weapon
The L3Harris „Red Wolf” system is expected to provide a „cost-effective, longer-range, precision weapon that can deliver diverse effects (kinetic or non-kinetic) from AH-1Z aircraft in land and sea-based environments,” according to NavAir. Christopher Kubasik, Chairman and CEO of L3Harris, highlighted the strategic importance of the new munition: “Our proven Red Wolf system can bring affordable mass to the Marine’s arsenal of advanced munitions within the timeline US officials have outlined to support the most lethal fighting force in the world.” The company boasts an impressive 200 nautical mile range (approximately 370 km) for this weapon. L3Harris’s selection was the result of a „competitive selection” and not a sole-source award.
Strategic Context: The Indo-Pacific and the Need for Innovation
The awarding of this contract comes against the backdrop of a major focus by the Marines on operations in the Indo-Pacific region, where longer-range attack capabilities will be essential for their aviation assets. „Red Wolf” directly addresses this requirement, offering enhanced operational flexibility across the vastness of maritime and island theaters of operations.
A Decade-Long Development Culminates in Success
The initial solicitation for the PASM program was issued by the US Navy last February. L3Harris unveiled its „Wolf Pack” program—now known as „Red Wolf”—last summer, after a decade of development. At the time, the company stated it was specifically marketing the weapon for this program. Rear Admiral Tony Rossi, who oversees the Program Executive Office for Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons, hailed the partnership: “We are proud to partner with L3Harris Technologies to deliver a system that will provide a decisive advantage to Marine Corps pilots and support their missions worldwide.” This collaboration underscores the importance of public-private partnership in developing cutting-edge military capabilities.
