President Frustrated with Putin, Turns to NATO
Expressing „unhappiness” with Russia, President Donald Trump today announced a novel strategy to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The plan involves selling U.S. weapons to European nations, who will then transfer them to Ukraine.
„We Made a Deal Today”
„I’m disappointed in President [Vladimir] Putin, because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn’t seem to get there,” Trump stated alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Under the agreement, NATO allies will purchase weapons from the U.S., which will then be provided to Ukraine without direct payment from the U.S. This includes critical air defenses like new Patriot batteries and PAC-3 interceptors, which Trump said could arrive in Ukraine within days.
NATO to Coordinate with Ukraine
Rutte explained that NATO will collaborate with Ukrainian officials to determine their specific needs. European nations can then either purchase weapons for Kyiv or supply weapons from their existing inventories, subsequently replenishing their stocks with U.S. replacements.
A Shift After Months of Uncertainty
This announcement marks a significant shift after nearly six months of uncertainty regarding U.S. support for Ukraine. After vowing to end the war between Russia and Ukraine on his first day after being sworn in office in January 2025, the U.S. had not announced any new weapons packages for Kyiv.
Trump’s Frustration with Putin
However, with no ceasefire in sight, Trump has apparently grown disillusioned with Putin’s willingness to end the conflict.
Windfall for US Defense Firms
The plan is expected to provide a substantial boost to U.S. defense firms. Roman Schweizer, an analyst at TD Cowen, noted that U.S. foreign military sales are already trending at a „historic pace,” with a significant portion tied to NATO members. This new initiative is projected to further accelerate that trend.
