Party-Line Vote Fills Vacancy

The US Senate has confirmed Matthew Lohmeier as the Department of the Air Force’s newest undersecretary, filling a vacancy that had been open since January. The confirmation vote was closely decided along party lines, 52-46, likely due to Lohmeier’s controversial past. He will succeed Edwin Oshiba, who has been serving as the acting Air Force undersecretary.

Background: Removal from Space Force

Lohmeier, a former Space Force lieutenant colonel, was removed from his position in 2021 after making comments on a podcast alleging the spread of Marxism in the military. President Donald Trump nominated him for the Air Force job in January, stating that he would „end” the military’s „‘woke’ policies” as part of an effort to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Divided Support During Confirmation Hearing

While Republican senators generally supported Lohmeier during his confirmation hearing in May, Democrats expressed reservations due to his divisive political posts on social media.

Responses to Previous Posts

When questioned about his previous posts, Lohmeier often deflected, citing the „context” of the statements in question. For instance, when asked about a post calling the January 6th Capitol riot a „government-led false flag and hoax,” Lohmeier said he didn’t recall writing it and demurred on the context.

Challenges Ahead for Lohmeier and Meink

Now confirmed, Lohmeier will work under Troy Meink, the Air Force secretary confirmed in May. Together, they will oversee modernization initiatives for the Air Force and Space Force, including a plan to „reoptimize” the two services for competition with China.

Concerns About Potential „Revenge Tour”

The confirmation of Lohmeier has raised concerns about the future of Gen. Stephen Whiting, the head of US Space Command who previously removed Lohmeier from his post in the Space Force. Senator Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, denounced Lohmeier’s nomination, warning that his tenure could be characterized by a „revenge tour.”

Lohmeier’s Response to Concerns

During his confirmation hearing, Lohmeier stated that he did not have a „vindictive spirit” and was „not interested in retribution.” However, he declined to recuse himself from personnel decisions involving officials who played a role in his previous ouster, which Reed believes increases the likelihood that he will „purge” and „seek revenge” against those he distrusts.
