In a landmark move poised to reshape the landscape of American shipbuilding, South Korea’s Hanwha Group has announced a substantial $5 billion investment in Hanwha Philly Shipyard. This commitment, a key component of South Korea’s broader initiative to bolster US shipbuilding capabilities, promises to usher in a new era of growth and innovation for the industry.

Expanding Capacity and Modernizing Infrastructure

The infusion of capital will be strategically directed towards expanding the shipyard’s infrastructure. Plans include the construction of two additional docks and three quays, significantly increasing the yard’s capacity to handle larger projects and accommodate more vessels simultaneously. Furthermore, Hanwha is actively exploring the development of a new block assembly facility, a move that could potentially increase annual production volume tenfold, catapulting the shipyard from its current output of fewer than two vessels to an impressive 20.

A Ceremony of Collaboration and Commitment

The announcement coincided with a momentous occasion: the naming ceremony for the US Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) third National Security Multi-mission Vessel (NSMV) at Hanwha Philly Shipyard. The vessel, designed to serve as a training platform for MARAD, was christened in the presence of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Todd Young, and other distinguished officials.

Hanwha Vice Chairman Dong Kwan Kim emphasized the importance of joint partnerships in strengthening the shipbuilding industry.

A Broader Pledge to American Shipbuilding

This investment in Hanwha Philly Shipyard is part of a $150 billion pledge to American shipbuilding by South Korea signed by the two countries in a deal in July.

Strategic Focus and Future Capabilities

Looking ahead, Hanwha Philly Shipyard is expected to play a pivotal role in future collaborations between the US and South Korea. The shipyard is slated to produce Liquefied Natural Gas carriers, naval modules and blocks, and, in the long term, naval vessels.

Modernization and Technological Advancement

Hanwha acquired the shipyard for $100 million in 2024, and said in today’s announcement that it plans to transform it into a digitally-enabled, high-efficiency shipyard with world-class automation and smart shipyard technology through its investments.
