Decision Reverses Biden’s Plan, Citing ‘Golden Dome’ and Cost Savings
President Donald Trump today announced that the headquarters for US Space Command (SPACECOM) will be relocated to Huntsville, Alabama, reversing a decision made by President Joe Biden to keep it in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
„The U.S. Space Command headquarters will move to the beautiful locale of a place called Huntsville, Alabama, forever to be known from this point forward as Rocket City,” Trump declared at a press conference.
‘Golden Dome’ and Cost Savings
Trump emphasized that the move would support his „Golden Dome” plan for a comprehensive air and missile defense shield over US territory. „A big factor also, in Huntsville SPACECOM will play a key role in building the Golden Dome. As you know, that’s going to be a big thing,” he said.
He also stated the move would save taxpayers money with Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R.-Ala., adding, „This move will save the taxpayers $480 million it’s not going to cost more.”
This decision marks the latest chapter in a years-long battle between Alabama and Colorado over the location of SPACECOM headquarters. Trump had initially chosen Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville as the preferred location just before leaving office in January 2021, a move that Biden subsequently overturned.
Political Undertones
The SPACECOM basing decision has been a source of contention between the Alabama and Colorado congressional delegations for the past six years.
Investigations by the Defense Department Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2022 found that internal Air Force studies favored Redstone Arsenal based on metrics such as cost. However, top military officials reportedly protested that the studies did not adequately consider the impact of the move on combat readiness.
A follow-up OIG investigation suggested that Biden’s decision to keep SPACECOM HQ in Colorado was a matter of prioritizing different factors.
The choice is inevitably viewed through a political lens, as Alabama is a Republican-leaning state, while Colorado typically votes Democrat.
“We love Alabama. I only won it by about 47 points. I don’t think that influenced my decision, though, right?” Trump said, smiling at Alabama lawmakers. (Trump won Alabama by 30.6 points in the 2024 election.) He also criticized Colorado’s mail-in voting system.
Complex Logistics
Moving SPACECOM will be a complex undertaking, particularly in ensuring sufficient facilities are equipped for top-secret communications and operations.
According to a Congressional Research Service report from December 12, 2024, approximately 1,700 personnel are directly assigned to the command’s headquarters, with about 18,000 joint force personnel assigned to its seven subcomponents based in six states.
However, the relocation won’t start from scratch. The Air Force previously developed plans for housing SPACECOM HQ at a 60-acre site at Redstone Arsenal, a US Army post that already hosts organizations such as the Army Space and Missile Defense Command, the Missile Defense Agency, and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Tuberville stated, “[W]e have plans intact. It’ll be behind a secure wall in Huntsville, Alabama, Redstone Arsenal. We have 40,000 people there. We have the FBI there, we have missile defense there. We have NASA, Blue Origin and SpaceX. It is the perfect place for Space Command.”
