The Italian Army is preparing for a crucial phase in modernizing its combat vehicle fleet, through a significant contract with the newly formed joint venture Leonardo-Rheinmetall Military Vehicles. Announced today, this agreement marks the first joint order for the nascent partnership, paving the way for the acquisition of potentially dozens of tracked combat vehicles and initiating a comprehensive process of renewing Rome’s military capabilities, according to an official announcement.
A Strategic Partnership for European Sovereignty
This initial contract holds a far deeper significance than a mere military transaction, bringing together the two companies and, implicitly, two of Europe’s largest nations. David Hoeder, executive chairman of the German-Italian joint venture, emphasized the importance of collaboration. „Cooperation is not optional anymore — it is the very essence of our European strategic sovereignty,” Hoeder stated in a press release issued by the firm, highlighting the strategic vision behind this transnational partnership.
Acquisition Details: From Lynx to New Configurations
According to information provided in the company’s press release, the Italian Army will initially receive five Rheinmetall Lynx KF-41 vehicles equipped with Lance turrets. These will be followed by 16 „newly configured vehicles,” which will use the same Lynx chassis but will integrate Leonardo’s Hitfist 30mm turret. The first delivery is expected by the end of this year. It is also anticipated that the initial five Lynx vehicles will subsequently be upgraded to the new configuration, ensuring fleet uniformity and interoperability.
Expanding the Program: Options and Advanced Training
The initial agreement is not the end of the plan. It also includes options for the acquisition of an additional 30 vehicles, signaling a long-term vision for strengthening Italian military capabilities. Beyond advanced hardware, the contractual package also comprises „training and simulation systems to better train crews,” a crucial aspect for efficient operation and maximizing the potential of modern technology.
The Birth of a Defense Industry Colossus
The creatively named joint venture Leonardo-Rheinmetall Military Vehicles was announced in July 2024. Its stated aim is the development of new Main Battle Tanks (MBT) and Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV) for the Italian Army, based on existing Rheinmetall systems. At the time of the partnership’s announcement, the German company underscored that „with the newly developed Panther main battle tank and the new Lynx infantry fighting vehicle, Rheinmetall has the appropriate basic technology on which to build in both programmes,” thus reinforcing the innovation capacity of the new industrial giant.
Strategic Renewal of Italy’s Heavy Fleet: The A2CS Program
This first tranche of tracked vehicles falls „within the scope” of what is known as the A2CS (Army Armoured Combat System) program. According to the joint firm, this program involves the „total acquisition” of 1,050 armored combat vehicles. This contract, along with anticipated future agreements for the Main Battle Tank program, „will renew the Italian Army’s heavy vehicles fleet,” the joint venture stated, marking a major and strategic transformation of Italy’s ground forces in the coming years.
