Two leading German companies, Helsing and HENSOLDT, are pooling their expertise to develop a new generation of „AI-enabled combat air systems.” This strategic partnership will integrate Helsing’s AI technology into the autonomous CA-1 aircraft, marking a significant step towards the future of European aerial defense.
A Strategic Alliance for Aerial Dominance
„The partnership between Helsing and HENSOLDT is a joining of forces of two national champions. We are united by a commitment to massive investments in future technologies,” stated Gundbert Scherf, Helsing Cofounder and CEO. This collaboration underscores Germany’s ambition to play a central role in developing advanced technology-based military capabilities.
Centaur Meets Multi-Domain Operations: The AI Brain and Sensor Backbone
The CA-1 aircraft, which marks Helsing’s entry into the Collaborative Combat Aircraft market, will be fitted with the company’s AI agent Centaur. HENSOLDT will contribute „sensor technologies, integrating radar, optronics, self-protection and electromagnetic warfare systems,” along with its Multi-Domain Operations Core software suite. By combining the technology from both companies, „the uncrewed aircraft will be capable of autonomous mission execution and secure information processing.”
HENSOLDT CEO Oliver Dörre added: „The future of modern defense systems lies in the intelligent and networked interplay of sensor technology and artificial intelligence. What connects us with Helsing is the common goal of responsibly advancing innovative technologies and thereby contributing to Europe’s capacity to act in terms of security policy.”
The CA-1: Pioneering Autonomous Mission Execution
The CA-1 was unveiled in September, with a full-size design showcased at Helsing subsidiary Grob Aircraft’s facility in Bavaria. At the time, the company did not provide details on cost, but announced that the aircraft is expected to be operational within four years.
Controlled by an AI pilot, the CA-1 will be able to function both as a single unit and among a swarm. HENSOLDT’s sensor systems and data fusions across all domains will maximize the CA-1’s capabilities, with each partner leading in its specific area of expertise.
A History of Collaboration, A Future of Innovation
This is not the first time the two companies have teamed up. Currently, they are working with Norway’s Kongsberg to develop a European satellite constellation for Intelligence, Surveillance and Target Acquisition. This new partnership for AI combat air systems further solidifies their position at the forefront of European defense innovation.
