A Flourishing Naval Alliance Emerges Singaporean defense industry leader ST Engineering has secured a significant subcontract from Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), a subsidiary of the United Arab Emirates’ national defense powerhouse, EDGE Group. This pivotal agreement marks a crucial step in bolstering Kuwait’s naval capabilities through the design, system supply, and construction of a modern warship fleet. The partnership underscores an intensified strategic regional and international collaboration in maritime security.
Unpacking the Extensive Collaboration ST Engineering’s six-year subcontract is valued at S$600 million (approximately US$467.6 million). Under the terms, the Singaporean firm will design and supply the platform systems for eight Missile Gun Boats destined for the Kuwaiti navy. Critically, ST Engineering will also undertake the construction of three of these vessels at its shipyard in Singapore. These ships are based on ST Engineering’s proven „Fearless-class” patrol vessels, renowned for their versatility and reliability, making them ideally suited for the demanding operational environment of the Middle East.
Strategic Gains in a Critical Market ST Engineering representatives lauded the agreement as a significant boost to the group’s growing international defense market presence. „This win strengthens ST Engineering’s growing momentum in international defense markets, underscoring the Group’s ability to deliver sophisticated naval platforms and capture rising demand for advanced maritime security solutions in the Middle East,” stated Tan Leong Peng, President of ST Engineering’s Marine business. This subcontract flows from a much larger, overarching deal inked in June 2025 between EDGE and the Kuwaiti government, valued at US$2.45 billion, for eight Falaj-3 offshore patrol vessels. At the time of its signing, EDGE hailed this as its largest contract ever secured in the Middle East.
Accelerated Deliveries and Regional Prioritization ADSB CEO David Massey confirmed that the delivery of the first vessel to Kuwait is anticipated by mid-2027. In a notable prior statement, Massey highlighted the UAE leadership’s commitment to prioritizing Kuwait’s fleet, revealing that „even the head of the UAE Navy [is] prepared to accept later delivery of some of their vessels in order to prioritize for Kuwait.” This demonstration of regional cooperation underscores the strategic importance attached to the project. The collaboration between EDGE and ST Engineering is not unprecedented. In May 2021, the UAE navy contracted four Falaj-3 offshore patrol vessels in a deal worth AED 3.5 billion (US$950 million), for which EDGE also tapped ST Engineering as a subcontractor. This history of successful joint ventures reinforces confidence in the current partnership.
