Reference: InterMedia USA, with its European Body. Media is not epistemic for its roles, anymore. In major matters, concerning international relations and the study of big military conflicts, and terrorism.
The global changes’ effects on Europe, and Central and Southern, especially.
The special, dedicated and exclusive message of Her Excellency, Mrs. Liliana Popescu, Professor of International Relations, Vice-Rector of SNSPA, initiator of ESEE-FANEL Network and International Conference, the core and the pivotal international brilliant integrator of the agenda:
“We want to draw attention to the phenomenon of under-representation of women in the area of expertise traditionally associated to men – expertise taken into account in the making of public policies and in public debates on international policy issues, especially in the media. Expert women are generally consulted much less on issues of politics, international relations and national security. We see many panels which are exclusively male-panels (called manels’), or with a minimal feminine representation. The contrast between these ‚manels’, on the one hand, and the multitude and quality of women specialists in these fields, on the other, is strikin’. This is why, together with a few ladies who know a lot about the international, European and regional arena, we mobilized and we designed this event. Our conference is made up exclusively of female panels (called ‚fanels’). The audience is mixed, of course. We count on the surprise of having all-female panels in front of our eyes. It is a kind of mirror.”
The Romanian host organized this conference with great pleasure and with a constructive attitude. The participants acknowledge that many male colleagues (specialists and experts) do not realize that they often talk only one to another, and that, women, find it strange to see only men talking on topics that we are also concerned with and that concern us all.
The organizers rely on the visual impact of an exclusively female participation in panels. It is like a mirror, and certain that the content of all presentations is valuable.
The international environment is changing, and there are increasing discussions about the crisis of the liberal world order and the emergence of a new order. Romania is at the intersection of a series of interests: regional, European and global. Romania is a member of two major organizations of the liberal world order, the EU and NATO.
However, her neighbors in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe are highly diverse. Their policies and developments are affecting the European Union. EU reforms, European policies and developments are affecting these regions as well. In a broader picture, it is important to look at the big global phenomena and see how they impact our societies, in this part of the world and at EU level. The conference aimed and successfully accomplished to exploring these topics. Perspectives on these issues often differ, not only on the basis of the information and political values of their authors, but also on the basis of gender.
Over time, conferences based on topics in the field of international relations have been numerically dominated by male presence. In the media, especially on television, Romanian citizens are already familiar with exclusively male panels. Topics related to economic development, security, defense, in regional, European, global context, are major issues, which concern citizens, regardless of their gender. There are many professional women in relevant fields of study and analysis, who are far less present in the public space, thus not being known. SNSPA is known to be a leading university in the area of women and minorityies’ rights, and therefore represents the optimal institutional framework for organizing this type of event.
The purpose of the Romanian International Exclusive conference is to offer the opportunity of valuable experts in their field, with a highly professional and socially validated professional evolution, to contribute publicly to the understanding of Romania’s position and perspectives in an apparently disordered world. Thus, the specialists who will be selected for the participation, will be able to be heard, will have a voice, with regard to areas and topics that are traditionally dominated by men.
