Industrial giant Rheinmetall announced today the finalization of a massive contract package with the Romanian state, marking the largest international order in the company’s recent history. The agreement, valued at €5.7 billion ($6.6 billion), aims to equip the armed forces with cutting-edge technology, ranging from armored combat vehicles and air defense systems to ammunition and naval vessels.

Lynx vehicles and Skyranger systems: The backbone of a new military era

The record-breaking order includes the delivery of 298 Lynx vehicles, the majority of which are configured as armored personnel carriers. The package is rounded out by specialized variants for reconnaissance, command posts, and medical missions. Additionally, Romania will receive an undisclosed number of Skyranger air defense systems, along with the necessary medium-caliber ammunition for both airspace protection and armored vehicle operations.

Beyond the terrestrial component, the agreement strengthens the nation’s maritime capabilities. The contract stipulates the acquisition of four new vessels: two offshore patrol ships and two diver support vessels, diversifying Romania’s defensive response in the Black Sea region.

Massive investments and technology transfer: Romania becomes an industrial hub for Rheinmetall

To fulfill this monumental order, Rheinmetall confirmed it will significantly expand its existing production capacities within Romania. The German company estimates investments of several hundred million euros at the local level, a process accompanied by an essential technology transfer to the national defense industry.

Equipment deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028 and will run through 2030. With this move, Romania becomes the second Lynx operator on NATO’s eastern flank after Hungary, confirming the region’s trend toward accelerated rearmament.

The SAFE program: The financial engine behind military modernization

This giant acquisition is funded through the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, a €150 billion mechanism created to support member states in bolstering their defense budgets. Romania holds a strategic position in this framework, being the second-largest beneficiary of the program, following Poland.

The decision to access these funds was anticipated since last autumn, when officials in Bucharest announced an allocation of over €16 billion for eligible projects. The funds are directed toward a wide range of equipment, from surveillance radars and anti-aircraft systems to missiles and drones, repositioning Romania as a significant military force in Eastern Europe.
