Brazilian aerospace leader Embraer is significantly ramping up the production of its KC-390 Millennium airlifter to meet surging international demand. Aiming to reach an annual output of 10 aircraft by 2030—up from the six units planned for this year—the South American manufacturer is strengthening its market position, forecasting a total addressable market of up to 450 aircraft over the next twenty years.

International momentum: Rising demand for the Millennium airlifter

The KC-390 is currently on a commercial winning streak, securing deals in nations such as Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and recently, Greece. Beyond these victories, Embraer is preparing deliveries for the Czech Republic, Uzbekistan, and South Korea, while a major competition in India remains a key target. This momentum places the Brazilian jet in direct competition with established platforms like the C-130J Super Hercules, offering a modern, versatile alternative for tactical transport and aerial refueling missions.

The Northrop Grumman alliance and the push for aerial refueling technology

A cornerstone of Embraer’s expansion strategy is its partnership with American defense giant Northrop Grumman. The two firms are exploring the integration of a dedicated refueling boom, a technical upgrade that would allow the Millennium to service a wider array of aircraft, including F-35 stealth fighters. This innovation is seen as a strategic entry point into the lucrative US market, with Embraer pledging to establish a dedicated American assembly line should Washington move forward with an official order.

Uncertainty in Florida: The future of the Super Tucano production line hangs in the balance

In contrast to the KC-390’s success, the production line in Jacksonville, Florida, dedicated to the A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft, faces a precarious future. Despite a projected market of 500 units for this model, a lack of immediate orders is threatening the viability of the US-based facility. Company officials have warned that while the plant remains operational for now, serious discussions with American partners and the US government will soon be required to determine the facility’s fate if new contracts do not materialize.
