The governments of Canberra and Ottawa have formalized a historic agreement that turns cutting-edge Australian technology into a cornerstone of North American defense.

In a strategic move that reaffirms the strong ties between the two nations, Canada has signed a $2.5 billion contract to purchase an Over the Horizon Radar (OTHR) system. This transaction represents the largest defense export ever achieved by Australia and marks the first international delivery of the renowned Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN), a technology developed locally and perfected over decades.

A technological first and the strengthening of the Five Eyes alliance

The deal is viewed not only as a commercial success but as proof of Australia’s ability to export high-technology systems without compromising national security. The implementation of this system in Canada will be supported by BAE Systems Australia, the industrial partner currently providing maintenance and upgrades for the radar network on Australian soil.

Beyond the financial aspect, the acquisition positions the Australian industry as a key supplier for strategic allies. By integrating this radar, detection and tracking capabilities for threats to North America will be significantly enhanced, while simultaneously strengthening intelligence sharing within the Five Eyes alliance, which includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The technology that defies the earth’s curvature and monitors thousands of kilometers

The JORN system distinguishes itself from conventional radars through its ability to monitor targets at extremely long ranges, between 1,000 and 3,000 kilometers. The secret to this performance lies in the use of high-frequency radio signals that are projected skyward and refracted by the ionosphere back to earth. This method allows the system to „see” beyond the horizon, as it is not limited by the planet’s curvature.

The network operates through a complex mechanism of separate transmitters and receivers. The echo returned from an airborne or seaborne target travels a similar path back to the receiver station, where data is processed instantly to provide real-time tracking information. Through this acquisition, Canada secures a wide-area surveillance tool essential for territorial security in an increasingly volatile global context.
