Moroccan startup Ballistic Defense System has developed a prototype of a one-way attack drone that can navigate without GPS. The Matador uses cameras, sensors, and algorithms to determine its position and reach its target.

Navigation driven by imagery and sensors

The company says its main technological contribution lies in software rather than hardware. The system combines several algorithmic agents, including one that estimates the drone’s movement using imagery and sensor data, and another that compares what the aircraft sees with a preloaded map. It also draws on information from an inertial measurement unit (IMU).

A Kalman filter, which the company describes as a “super agent,” weighs information from these components and helps make navigation decisions. By avoiding reliance on GPS, the drone could be less vulnerable to signal jamming and spoofing—tactics seen in conflicts across the Middle East and North Africa.

Prototype funded by its founders

Founded in December 2023, Ballistic Defense System developed the Matador prototype in 18 months with a $1.15 million investment from its founders.

The aircraft currently being tested has a four-meter wingspan and a range of 250 kilometers. The company plans to design its own airframe, with aerodynamics inspired by small aircraft, for a future version with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers. Testing future configurations will require access to a runway.

Talks underway on demonstrations and technology transfer

The company has not yet signed any contracts but is in discussions with the Moroccan army about holding demonstrations ahead of potential procurement deals. Two Gulf nations have also requested demonstrations, though their names have not been disclosed.

According to co-founder and managing director Fahd Laamoumi, those countries are interested not only in procuring the system but also in a full technology transfer, local production, and the relocation of the company’s team.

Ballistic Defense System plans to display the Matador prototype at the Marrakech Air Show, scheduled for the following week.
