System aims to coordinate defense against thousands of threats
Helsing, one of Europe’s best-known defense technology startups, has introduced a new air defense system and two types of interceptor missiles.
Called Contra, the system is described by the company as an AI-controlled autonomous air defense solution designed to protect against large-scale drone and missile attacks. Helsing says Contra can track and engage hundreds or even thousands of targets simultaneously.
The system is designed to work with existing air defense interceptors and counter-drone systems. Helsing is also offering two new container-launched interceptors as part of an integrated package.
Two interceptors, two propulsion systems
The first model, AD-1 Inferno, is jet-powered. According to Helsing, it can loiter near a target, operate in swarms and make repeated interception attempts.
The second, AD-2 Ambush, uses a solid-rocket motor and can reach Mach 2.5. Helsing gives its range as 20 kilometers.
The company has not disclosed specific price estimates for either missile. It says, however, that they will be significantly less expensive than existing interceptors.
NATO seeks more affordable options
The announcement comes as NATO countries step up efforts to develop lower-cost interceptors. In recent weeks, Anduril, Lockheed Martin and CHAOS Industries have also unveiled options in the field.
Niklas Köhler, Helsing’s president and co-founder, said Contra’s AI connects existing sensors and effectors in real time while adding the AD-1 and AD-2 interceptors. The company says the combination of jet and rocket propulsion, an all-weather radar seeker and two independent European supply chains could support production at industrial scale.
