The US government has authorized a potential sale for South Korea to acquire four E-7 Wedgetail surveillance and early warning aircraft along with related equipment, with a total estimated value of $4.9 billion. This deal, pending South Korea’s final decision, aims to enhance its Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft (AEW&C) capabilities.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced late Monday that the State Department has approved the proposed arrangement, highlighting that the sale will bolster South Korea’s ability to address current and future threats by enhancing its intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and airborne early warning and control capabilities.

The announcement further noted that the acquisition would improve the Republic of Korea Air Force’s command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) interoperability with the United States. Importantly, officials indicated that South Korean forces would integrate the new equipment and support smoothly into their existing military framework.

South Korea already operates a number of Wedgetail aircraft, joining the ranks of other operators, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and Turkey. However, in late 2023, Seoul initiated a competition to augment its AEW&C capabilities. Various international contenders have emerged, including Saab’s GlobalEye surveillance aircraft and a partnership between L3Harris, Korean Air, and Israel’s ELTA Systems.

The Wedgetail has also been selected as the newest AEW&C platform for the US Air Force and NATO, although the US acquisition faced challenges involving prolonged negotiations with Boeing, while NATO’s procurement came under scrutiny for various reasons.

It is important to note that Foreign Military Sale approvals do not constitute finalized agreements but indicate the US government’s willingness to support the sale if South Korea opts for the Wedgetail. Should the E-7 be the chosen platform, the final price and the number of units may vary as contract negotiations proceed. Boeing has not provided comment regarding this potential transaction.
