A Return to International Defense Shows
The recent International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) witnessed the notable return of Russian firms, coinciding with Gulf nations’ enhanced diplomatic engagement on the global stage. During IDEX, Saudi Arabia facilitated discussions between the United States and Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, while the United Arab Emirates hosted talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, highlighting the region’s neutral and mediating role.
Key Exhibits from Russian Firms
On the exhibit floor, prominent Russian manufacturers showcased several advanced military systems. Kalashnikov featured its Kub-10E loitering munition, positioned alongside High Precision Complexes Holding’s Pantsir-SMD-E air defense system, complemented by various other launchers. The Unmanned Systems Group presented its “combat-tested” Supercam S350 UAV, renowned for its Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) capabilities.
Additionally, The Ural Works of Civil Aviation introduced the export version of its “combat-tested” Forpost UAV during the event, marking its international debut.
Russian Defense Presence in the Gulf Region
The significant presence of Russian firms at IDEX is not unexpected, given that Middle Eastern and African nations represent approximately half of Rosoboronexport’s order volume, as reported by TASS. CEO Alexander Mikheyev highlighted the ongoing collaboration with international partners in projects related to arms and military equipment, which caters to various armed forces.
This confluence of defense showcases and diplomatic discussions not only underscores the evolving geopolitical landscape but also reflects the resilience of defense partnerships amid global tensions.
