Strategic Leadership Positioned to Enhance Unmanned Maritime Operations
Unmanned maritime systems manufacturer Saildrone announced today the appointment of John Mustin, the retired three-star admiral and former chief of Navy reserve, as its new president. This strategic hire comes as demand for Saildrone’s services among naval operations continues to surge.
“John Mustin brings a truly unique blend of naval operational expertise and commercial experience to the company,” remarked Richard Jenkins, founder and CEO of Saildrone, in a statement. “As naval demand for Saildrone services grows exponentially, John will deliver the leadership firepower I need to grow both the team and the defense business, ensuring our products continue to meet the demands of high-end naval warfare.”
Extensive Naval Experience to Drive Innovation
Mustin dedicated 34 years to the Navy, concluding his service as the head of the Navy’s reserve force in September 2024, following a role as vice commander of US Fleet Forces. Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Mustin stated, “I’m thrilled to join the Saildrone team at this critical moment for global maritime security characterized by a rapidly evolving geopolitical environment.”
He highlighted the transformative potential of Saildrone’s capabilities in enhancing naval strength. “Having spent my career focused on naval operations and technology innovation, I recognize Saildrone’s capabilities are transformational to delivering naval strength to our warfighters at a time when our nation’s shipbuilding capacity is floundering,” Mustin added. “We, and our allies and partners, need high-capability platforms, delivered at scale, immediately. Saildrone defined the category and is the only operationally proven USV technology that is ready to scale today.”
Innovative Solutions for Undersea Surveillance
Saildrone specializes in the manufacturing and operation of unmanned surface vessels designed for unclassified intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance missions for the US Navy and several civilian federal agencies.
In conjunction with Mustin’s appointment, Saildrone announced the successful integration of Thales Australia’s Blue Sentry thin-line towed array with its Surveyor drone. This innovative combination creates a groundbreaking system for autonomous long-endurance undersea maritime domain awareness (MDA).
“This project, funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), marks a significant leap forward in persistent, real-time, undersea surveillance,” the company stated.
