The Israeli Ministry of Defense (MOD) announced on Monday the signing of a $55 million contract with Elbit Systems to equip its fleet of Apache and Black Hawk helicopters with advanced protection systems. This initiative is part of Israel’s broader effort to enhance its military resilience amid ongoing regional conflicts.

Enhancing Helicopter Defense: Cutting-Edge Threat Neutralization

Under the five-year agreement, Israeli Air Force helicopters will be outfitted with innovative self-protection systems, including Elbit’s Directional Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM) and other advanced electronic warfare solutions. These systems are designed to identify, disrupt, and neutralize a range of threats, including guided missiles, ensuring maximum survivability in complex combat scenarios. The MOD highlighted that these upgrades are integral to ongoing force build-up and modernization efforts led by Major General (Res.) Amir Baram, the Director General of the MOD since March 2025.

Strategic Collaboration for Better Safety and Operations

The contract, signed by the MOD’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) in collaboration with the Israeli Air Force, underscores the focus on integrating proven defense technologies to bolster aircrew safety. Oren Sabag, Elbit’s General Manager of ISTAR and EW Division, emphasized that these systems will significantly enhance both the safety and operational capabilities of Israel’s helicopter fleet in hostile environments.

Elbit’s Role in Israel’s Defense Innovation

Elbit Systems, one of Israel’s leading defense contractors, has a longstanding reputation for providing cutting-edge military solutions. The company’s DIRCM systems have already been integrated into various international militaries, including NATO and the Netherlands, and are now pivotal to Israel’s efforts to safeguard its aerial assets.

Israel’s Broader Defense Modernization Post-October 2023

Following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel has increased investments in its defense capabilities. This includes expanding its air force with additional F-35 squadrons, procuring new F-15 fighters, and deploying new drone and naval systems. Notably, Israel reversed a prior decision to retire some Apache helicopters, opting instead to maintain and upgrade these platforms using advanced defensive systems. Additional acquisitions include heavy-lift CH-52K helicopters, now being integrated with Israeli-designed systems.

A Focus on Advanced Threat Protection Technologies

Brig. Gen. Yehuda Elmakayes, head of the R&D Department at the MOD’s DDR&D, stated that the project builds on years of investments in aerial platform protection. “This program represents a significant technological breakthrough that addresses current and emerging threats,” he noted. Elbit’s experience, including contracts with NATO and the Netherlands, demonstrates its capacity to deliver proven defense solutions that enhance military safety and effectiveness globally.

Looking Ahead

Israel’s ongoing defense investments, exemplified by this latest helicopter protection upgrade, reflect its strategic priorities in maintaining technological superiority and ensuring operational readiness in a volatile security environment. The contract with Elbit highlights the country’s commitment to deploying innovative, reliable systems to defend its skies and maintain a technological edge in regional and global security scenarios.
