Rear Adm. Kevin Smith Relieved of Duty Following ‘Loss of Confidence’
The US Navy has relieved Rear Adm. Kevin Smith, the senior officer overseeing the acquisitions of its unmanned maritime systems and small combatants, effective today. The abrupt change in command stems from „a loss of confidence” based on „a complaint substantiated by an Office of the Naval Inspector General investigation,” according to official statements.
IG Findings Trigger Leadership Change
Acting acquisition executive Brett Seidle made the decision to relieve Smith, who had served as the program executive officer (PEO) for unmanned and small combatants since June 2023. Smith has been re-assigned within the Naval Sea Systems Command. The Navy’s official statement remains tight-lipped about the specific nature of the inspector general’s findings, and Breaking Defense has reached out for further details.
Interim Leadership Named
In the wake of Smith’s removal, Melissa Kirkendall, executive director for PEO USC, has assumed temporary responsibilities. The Navy’s statement underscored its commitment to maintaining the highest standards for its leaders, emphasizing accountability when those standards are not met.
