A new survey from the Reagan Institute indicates a growing desire among Americans for greater U.S. leadership in international affairs, a shift that transcends political divides, including those within the MAGA base.
Rising Support for Global Engagement
The 2025 Reagan Institute Summer Survey highlights a significant increase in the preference for American global leadership, climbing from 40% in 2022 to 64% this year. The institute suggests Americans are not seeking isolation but rather advocating for a foreign policy rooted in strength and peace.
Republican Shift Drives Surge
The surge in support for international engagement is primarily attributed to a shift among Republicans. Engagement support has risen from 59% of Republicans and 61% of MAGA Republicans in November 2024. Despite this, 57% of respondents still believe the U.S. would be better off focusing on domestic issues.
Key Geopolitical Issues
The survey, conducted before recent U.S. strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, found broad bipartisan agreement on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. However, support for increased U.S. assistance to Israel was limited, with 67% of Republicans favoring sending weapons compared to only 37% of Democrats.
NATO Support Remains Strong
Ahead of a NATO summit, the poll revealed that despite past skepticism, general support for the alliance stands at 62%. An even higher 71% support the U.S. upholding its Article V mutual defense pledge.
Divided on Ukraine
While 58% of Americans want Ukraine to win the war (80% of Democrats), Republican support is lower at 47%. Twelve percent of Republicans explicitly support Russia, up from 8% last year, with over a quarter hoping for neither side to win.
Partisan Divide on Territorial Expansion
Significant partisan differences emerged regarding potential U.S. territorial expansion, with 81% of Republicans supporting the acquisition of the Panama Canal, compared to only 35% of Democrats. Similar, though slightly lower, divides were seen regarding taking control of Greenland.
