A Strategic Move to Enhance Defense Connectivity
French defense and aerospace multinational Thales and Norwegian defense contractor Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace have announced the formation of a new joint venture (JV) dedicated to communications technology. This partnership aims to unify their existing communications businesses in response to increased demand for advanced, interoperable military communication systems across NATO and European armed forces.
Equal Ownership, Growing Ambitions
Both partners will hold a 50/50 stake in the JV, which will employ around 350 personnel across offices in Oslo, Trondheim, and Asker, Norway. The new entity is grounded in their combined revenues of approximately NOK 1.5 billion ($178 million) last year, with projections estimating revenues could reach NOK 3 billion ($358 million) by the end of the decade—driven by promising market opportunities and synergies.
Addressing Modern Military Needs
Thales emphasizes that the new JV is designed to meet the escalating demands of modern defense connectivity. It aims to support European and allied forces with systems that prioritize interoperability and sovereignty, enabling large-scale equipment deliveries and integrated communications solutions.
Core Capabilities of the Partners
Thales in Norway specializes in providing secure communication networks, including high-grade cryptographic voice and data systems for NATO and numerous allied nations. Meanwhile, Kongsberg supplies tactical radio systems for land operations, as well as tactical networks integrated into major weapon systems like the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS).
Historical Cooperation and Future Prospects
This new JV builds on previous collaborations, including a 2021 partnership with Norwegian mechanical engineering firm Ritek aimed at radar opportunities. The formation of this joint venture underscores both companies’ commitment to strengthening defense connectivity infrastructure and delivering innovative, advanced communication systems tailored for evolving operational challenges.
