In a landmark achievement for Turkey’s defense industry, defense contractor ASFAT has been selected by the Turkish navy to construct Ankara’s first indigenous air defense destroyer. The signing ceremony took place today at the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) stand at IDEF 2025.

The TF2000 Destroyer: A Game Changer in Air Defense

The TF2000, a 149-meter destroyer boasting a speed of over 28 knots, is set to revolutionize Turkey’s air defense capabilities. ASFAT CEO Mustafa Ilbas and Turkish navy commander Admiral Ercument Tatlioglu formalized the agreement, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s naval advancements. The launch is expected in 2028, with delivery to the navy by 2030.

Construction Timeline and Advanced Technology

Steel cutting for the vessel is slated to begin in November 2025. The destroyer will feature a phased array radar system developed and produced by Aselsan. „This ship is going to be a game changer in air defense, not only [to secure the] sea but also mainland,” an official at ASFAT’s stand remarked.

Building the Future Fleet

The construction of the TF2000 will occur in an Istanbul shipyard. ASFAT aims to complete one full block of the ship by the end of this year, with the overall build consisting of approximately 60 blocks. Upon completion, the vessel will be armed with two vertical launching systems comprising 96 cells, as well as an indigenously-produced, 127mm main gun.

Offshore Patrol Vessels to Bolster Naval Capabilities

In addition to the destroyer, ASFAT recently secured a deal to equip the Turkish navy with four offshore patrol vessels (OPVs). Based on the Ada-class corvette design, the firm anticipates completing the construction of these vessels within 36 months.

Strategic Expansion and Submarine Development

ASFAT, a government-owned contractor operating in 10 shipyards, is strategically expanding its export deals. The company recently put into service what it calls the largest submarine floating dock, with a lifting capacity of 3,000 tons, in August 2024.

ASFAT also showcased a model of the Mildem, a national submarine for which ASFAT has become the main contractor „two months ago.” The submarine, currently in the design phase, will measure 80 meters in length with a 7-meter beam, displace 2,700 tons, and accommodate a crew of 40.
