Turkish defense giant Aselsan has secured a significant $1.9 billion (EUR 1.65 billion) contract with the Turkish Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) to supply air defense systems to the Turkish armed forces. The announcement, made on Tuesday, outlines deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2031.

Steel Dome Takes Shape

This deal follows Aselsan’s appointment as the project lead for Ankara’s ambitious national air defense project, Steel Dome, and a substantial $1.5 billion government investment in a Steel Dome production hub. The facility is envisioned to be the largest air defense production center in Europe.

Evolving Air Defense Solutions

Aselsan CEO Ahmet Akyol told Breaking Defense in July that air defense solutions need to evolve to meet changing threats, emphasizing the need for continuous upgrades and new features.

Recent Deliveries and Expansion

During a visit by Breaking Defense to Aselsan facilities in late August, the company showcased 47 vehicle-based air defense systems that had been officially delivered to the Turkish armed forces.

International Collaborations at DSEI

The new air defense deal coincided with Aselsan’s participation in the DSEI defense expo in London. At the expo, Aselsan announced a joint venture with Indonesian PT Republikorp to co-produce radios and defense electronics and communication systems.

Aselsan also signed a memorandum of understanding with Brazilian AKAER to collaborate on electro-optics, avionics, and armored vehicle modernization, and inked a letter of intent for military communications cooperation with Nokia.

KORKUT 100/25 Makes International Debut

Aselsan’s KORKUT 100/25 mobile counter-drone system made its international debut at DSEI, showcasing its ability to neutralize mini- and micro-drones using an integrated 25 mm ATOM smart munition.
