In a strategic shift, the U.S. Air Force has decided to forgo a planned competition for its next aerial refueling tankers, choosing instead to procure up to 75 additional KC-46 Pegasus tankers from Boeing.
Maintaining Momentum
„The Air Force is investing in both tanker capacity and capability to enable the Joint Force now and into the future by ensuring an uninterrupted recapitalization of KC-135 aircraft,” an Air Force spokesperson stated. This decision, dubbed the ‘KC-46A Production Extension’ program, aims to sustain continuous tanker recapitalization following the conclusion of the current contract.
A Year of Speculation Ends
This announcement puts an end to over a year of speculation regarding the Air Force’s strategy for a „bridge tanker,” intended to bridge the gap between the KC-46 and the Next Generation Air Refueling System (NGAS), previously known as KC-Z.
Competition That Wasn’t
Earlier in the decade, the Air Force expressed intentions to hold a competition for approximately 150 tankers based on existing designs. This led to a potential showdown between Boeing’s KC-46 and Airbus’s A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport, with Lockheed Martin initially partnering with Airbus as a U.S. prime for the A330 (LMXT). However, the Air Force later hinted at sole-sourcing additional KC-46s, reducing the anticipated buy to around 75 aircraft. Lockheed Martin withdrew from the competition in 2023.
Hints in the Budget
A strong indication of the Air Force’s direction emerged in the fiscal 2026 budget rollout, where the service announced plans to maximize its existing KC-46 contract with Boeing, increasing the program of record from 179 to 188 aircraft.
Confidence in Boeing’s Progress
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Allvin expressed confidence in Boeing’s progress in resolving existing KC-46 technical issues. „I’m not saying we’re totally out of the woods, but I believe we are making good progress clearing those deficiencies, and the aircraft is performing very well operationally,” Allvin said.
