A revolutionary moment in military and civil aviation has been marked by Joby Aviation, which successfully conducted the first demonstrative flight of a new hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. This achievement paves the way for a new generation of aerial vehicles that the company intends to pitch to military customers through a strategic agreement with defense giant L3Harris. Today’s announcement underscores an acceleration of efforts to integrate advanced technologies into defense operations.
A Crucial Innovation for Defense: From Electric to Hybrid
The flight, conducted at Joby’s Marina, California, facility on November 7, 2025, represents a significant step towards operational demonstrations planned for next year with prospective customers, including the US government. The autonomous aircraft, while produced by Joby for commercial applications, will be missionized and configured for military users by L3Harris. It will integrate Joby’s proprietary autonomy stack, dubbed „SuperPilot” (source: Joby Aviation company release).
JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby, emphasized the importance of rapid development: „It’s imperative that we find ways to deliver new technology into the hands of American troops more quickly and cost-efficiently than we have in the past” (source: JoeBen Bevirt, CEO Joby Aviation).
Overcoming Limitations and New Tactical Horizons
The aircraft is based on Joby’s all-electric S4 platform but has been modified to include a hybrid powertrain with a gas turbine. This change, according to the companies, is essential to provide the necessary range for military missions. The team intends to market the autonomous system to the Department of Defense (DoD) for a variety of roles, such as contested logistics, drone wingmen roles, and more.
The US military is actively seeking platforms that can operate in austere environments like the Indo-Pacific region, where runways are scarce and potential threats from adversaries like China are severe. The underlying S4 platform can take off and land vertically like a helicopter but can rotate its propellers to fly like an airplane.
The US Air Force previously experimented with electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft under its Agility Prime program, where Joby delivered its S4 in 2023 for testing missions such as cargo transport. However, the Air Force has acknowledged that all-electric vehicles lack the range necessary for military missions and has expressed interest in hybrid platforms instead. In fact, eVTOL experimentation efforts are transitioning from Agility Prime to a new program (source: US Air Force).
Dual-Use Technology: A Winning Bet
JoeBen Bevirt highlighted the advantages of dual-use technology: „The magic of dual-use technology is that it creates value in both directions” (source: JoeBen Bevirt, CEO Joby Aviation). He added that by building on their proven technology stack, partners can „rapidly deliver new capabilities for the Pentagon,” while Joby benefits from „advancing the maturity of our hybrid and autonomous systems.” This, in turn, will help pave the way for commercial applications, from longer-range hybrid VTOL missions to autonomous air operations in commercial airspace.
On the Global Agenda: Presence at Dubai Airshow
The announcement comes ahead of the Dubai Airshow, a key hub for the display of eVTOL aircraft, where both Joby and L3Harris are expected to have a presence. L3Harris and other defense players like Anduril have recently expanded into eVTOL partnerships, as the industry bets on the mutual benefits of investments for both defense and commercial applications. This trend underscores the increasing convergence between civil technological innovation and strategic military necessities.
