The German Navy today took delivery of its first NH90 Sea Tiger helicopter at Nordholz air station, a pivotal moment marking a significant uplift in its anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. This handover, conducted by Airbus Helicopters on behalf of the NH Industries (NHI) joint venture, inaugurates a new era for German naval forces, promising a more robust presence in strategic waters.
A New Naval Era in the Atlantic and Baltic Sea
Germany is slated to acquire a total of 31 NH90 Multi-Role Frigate Helicopters (MRFH), with deliveries projected to be completed by the end of the decade. Captain Broder Nielsen, commander of German naval aviation Nordholz, underscored the strategic importance of this acquisition in a recent briefing: “The North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea is our playground where we have to fight against enemy submarines, and this is our major role — fighting enemy submarines.” Nielsen also noted that, alongside the new Sea Tiger, the navy recently introduced its first Boeing P-8 Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft, signaling an acceleration of fleet modernization, though the need for faster deliveries persists.
A World-Class Weapon for a Renewed Force
NHI President Axel Aloccio proudly asserted that the German Navy will possess „the best of what’s available from the NH90 [product line] and I would even say the best of what’s available in the entire worldwide market for this type of machine.” The twin-engine rotorcraft represents the most modern version of the NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) and is slated to replace the German Navy’s aging and technologically outmatched Mk88A Sea Lynx fleet. Additionally, the German Navy already operates 18 NH90 Sea Lion naval transport helicopters, primarily for maritime search and rescue missions. Captain Nielsen added that given the absence of fast jets for the last two decades, this acquisition “will be a big improvement of our capacity” to engage surface targets.
The Sea Tiger’s Arsenal: Firepower and Advanced Detection
The new helicopter will be heavily armed to confront the most complex threats. It will feature MBDA-made MARTE Extended Range (ER) anti-surface warfare missiles, capable of neutralizing vessels at considerable distances, French-Italian MU90 lightweight torpedoes for anti-submarine combat, and Belgian M3M machine guns for defense and tactical engagements. Beyond its offensive punch, it will also be equipped with a dipping sonar and sonarbuoys, essential for submarine detection and tracking in challenging environments.
At Sea and in the Air: Testing and Integration Phase Begins
The crucial operational test and evaluation (OT&E) phase, which includes ship embarkation tasks, is scheduled to commence next year. This will confirm the helicopter’s ability to operate under real-world mission conditions. A first Sea Tiger was already deployed this summer to Nordholz to operate with German Navy pilots and NHI crew in the North Sea. “I was part of that, and I could see how the integration with Frigate 125 worked out. It worked out pretty well,” Captain Nielsen confirmed, indicating a smooth transition towards the new capabilities and a promise for the future of German naval defense.
