In a significant boost to its already formidable launch manifest, SpaceX has secured multiple contracts from the U.S. Space Force for a series of crucial national security missions. The awards include launches for the Space Development Agency (SDA)’s next-generation missile warning and tracking satellites, as well as classified payloads for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The total value of these new launch awards is reported to be $739 million.

Billions in the Balance: Bolstering Space-Based Defenses

These latest contracts fall under the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 program, an initiative designed to procure commercial launch services for less challenging and often non-critical missions, typically destined for low- or medium-Earth orbits. The substantial investment underscores the Pentagon’s accelerating push to deploy a resilient, multi-layered space architecture capable of detecting and defending against emerging threats.

SDA’s Orbital Arsenal: Tracking and Fire Control Takes Flight

A significant portion of the new contracts is dedicated to bolstering the Space Development Agency’s capabilities. The first major task order, dubbed SDA-2, encompasses three launches. Two of these will deploy a total of 18 Tranche 2 Tracking Layer satellites, developed by L3Harris, designed to provide advanced missile warning and tracking. The third launch under SDA-2 will loft eight Fire-control On Orbit-support-to-the-war Fighter (FOO Fighter or F2) satellites, built by Millennium Space Systems, aimed at enhancing fire control solutions. These vital assets are slated to begin their journey to orbit in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026.

Following closely, a second task order, SDA-3, schedules two additional launches commencing in the third quarter of fiscal year 2027. These missions will deploy another 18 satellites manufactured by Lockheed Martin, further expanding the SDA’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer. These deployments build upon earlier contract awards in January 2024, where L3Harris Technologies ($919 million), Lockheed Martin ($890 million), and Sierra Space ($740 million) were each tasked to deliver 18 space vehicles, including two equipped for fire control. Millennium Space Systems also secured a contract worth up to $414 million in April 2024 for the eight FOO Fighter birds.

Shadow Missions: NRO’s Classified Cargo Awaits

Beyond the SDA’s transparent objectives, the SpaceX awards also encompass an undisclosed number of „NTO-5” missions for the National Reconnaissance Office. Consistent with the NRO’s clandestine nature, no specific details about these satellites have been released. These classified payloads are scheduled for launch between the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 and the second quarter of fiscal year 2028, hinting at ongoing efforts to enhance U.S. intelligence-gathering capabilities from space.

The successive awards to SpaceX solidify its position as a critical partner in the Department of Defense’s strategy to rapidly deploy advanced space assets. This flurry of activity signals an urgent drive to modernize and fortify America’s orbital infrastructure, ensuring a decisive edge in missile defense and intelligence operations for decades to come.
