A significant tremor has rattled the European defence industry landscape as Italian giant Leonardo finalized its acquisition of Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV), a deal valued at a staggering €1.7 billion ($1.9 billion). This pivotal move is set to redefine Leonardo’s ambitions, cementing its status as a premier, fully integrated Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the critical land defence sector.
Consolidating European Leadership
The acquisition marks a fundamental step in Leonardo’s strategic plan to bolster its role as a leading player in defence systems. By integrating IDV, the Group’s comprehensive portfolio of solutions for security and defence expands significantly, now encompassing an even broader range from tracked to wheeled platforms. This completion comes shortly after the initial acquisition plans were disclosed in July 2025.
Synergies and Expanded Market Potential
The partnership between Leonardo and Iveco is not new, with the two companies having collaborated for years on the development of the Centauro II wheeled anti-tank platform. Now, Leonardo incorporates an impressive product portfolio, including the Ariete C2 tracked main battle tank and the Viking multirole uncrewed ground vehicle. Last year, IDV reported revenues of €1.4 billion and operates six strategic production sites across Italy, Germany, Romania, and Brazil.
The acquisition, financed by Leonardo’s available cash resources, aims to leverage the complementary nature of the two companies’ sales networks and their combined ability to offer integrated solutions in high-potential markets.
„End-to-End” Solutions and Italian Army Support
By combining the extended product ranges, which include Leonardo’s advanced electronics—from command and control systems to electro-optics and state-of-the-art turrets—with IDV’s robust vehicles, the path is cleared for delivering comprehensive „end-to-end” solutions to customers.
Leonardo’s expansion into the land domain reflects the company’s consistent efforts to closely support the modernization of the Italian army. This tight collaboration with the armed services has already culminated in the formation of a military vehicles joint venture with German giant Rheinmetall, focused on prioritizing the development of new Main Battle Tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV) destined for Rome. This acquisition underscores Leonardo’s determination to secure a dominant position in an ever-evolving global defence landscape.
