The strategic partnership between Israeli titan Rafael and the German defense industry has reached a turning point with the launch of DND Digital. This new division, integrated into the Dynamit Nobel Defence structure, is more than a commercial transaction; it represents a radical paradigm shift: the total transfer of technological authority to ensure Germany’s absolute control over its own tactical communications.

Ending Dependency: Decisions in Seconds, Not Hours

In the wake of the war in Ukraine, time has become the most precious resource on the battlefield. Andreas Dohrn, Director of DND Digital, highlights that the pace of maneuver decisions has compressed from hours to mere minutes. In an era of intense electronic warfare, where the electromagnetic spectrum is constantly contested by jamming and spoofing, an army that lacks total control over its radio software becomes irrelevant.

DND Digital is localizing BNET technology (software-defined radio) on German soil, providing the Bundeswehr not just with hardware, but with the capacity to evolve independently. „When supply chains run through a single foreign capital, your operational autonomy ends where that capital’s politics begin,” Dohrn explains, emphasizing the urgency of European industrial sovereignty.

Germany: Europe’s Digital Engine

Choosing Germany as the center of excellence for this technology was no accident. On one hand, there is the sheer scale of investment: the Sondervermögen and Zeitenwende initiatives have generated the largest demand signal for tactical communications in Europe. On the other hand, Germany’s industrial depth allows for the integration of these complex systems directly into vehicles and command posts by local engineers.

DND Digital is not just a sales office. It is a complete ecosystem, with development centers in Berlin and Leipzig and a massive production facility in Flintbek. Here, BNET radios are built entirely from scratch—from printed circuit boards to final testing—utilizing local suppliers and adhering to strict NATO standards.

Interoperability: The New Measure of Force

Gideon Weiss, Vice President at Rafael, points out a vital aspect: communications are the most sensitive piece of the battlefield’s digital puzzle. The DND Digital model proves that national sovereignty and NATO interoperability are not opposing concepts.

Through this blueprint, Israeli technology officially becomes European. Once transferred to the German subsidiary, the intellectual property can be adapted and classified according to national requirements without the need for external oversight. This approach transforms critical infrastructure into a national asset while creating hundreds of high-skilled jobs for engineers, cryptographers, and systems specialists.

A Blueprint for Allies

The success of this German-Israeli collaboration is viewed as a template that can be replicated in any NATO member state with the political will and an established industrial base. The message is clear: the future of defense no longer lies in off-the-shelf purchases, but in deep partnerships that transfer not just products, but the power to create and innovate locally.
