In its debut at the MSPO defense exhibition in Poland, Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer is actively promoting its KC-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft, aiming to solidify a potential deal with Warsaw.
Strategic Fit for Poland’s Growing Needs
„We see a lot of potential for the KC-390 in Poland, considering the growth of its forces and the increasing demand for logistics and rapid deployment capabilities,” stated Marcio Monteiro, Embraer’s Chief Marketing Officer. He emphasized the aircraft’s suitability for agile combat employment, not only for Poland but also for other nations in the region.
European Interest and Existing Operators
Several European nations, including Austria, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, have already placed orders for the KC-390. Furthermore, Poland’s neighbors, Slovakia and Lithuania, have expressed their intentions to acquire the aircraft, while Hungary and Portugal are currently operating the platform. Brazil, South Korea, and another undisclosed customer complete the current user base.
Poland’s Search for Multi-Role Aircraft
Following a 2021 agreement to acquire five Lockheed Martin C-130H aircraft, of which two have already been delivered, the Polish Air Force is actively seeking additional multirole transport and refueling aircraft.
Embraer’s Comprehensive Proposal
Embraer is offering a comprehensive package to Poland, including local parts production, KC-390 systems Polonization, aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, as well as the establishment of a European KC-390 tactical training center and aircraft completion/final assembly line.
According to Monteiro, „We believe that some Polish companies and institutions can contribute with systems and maintenance for the airplanes. We see Poland as a strategic partner, and we are open to establishing technical training centers here.”
Frederico Lemos, Embraer’s Chief Commercial Officer, added that a final assembly line would be viable with an order of around 20 aircraft. „Depending on the number of aircraft and the size of the investment, Embraer remains open to discussing potential localization in Poland.”
Tanker Capabilities and Adaptability
Embraer representatives highlighted that every KC-390 is built with the provisions to be converted into a tanker aircraft. The end user can purchase the necessary equipment to enable air-to-air refueling capabilities, either during the initial acquisition process or at a later stage.
Monteiro stated, „We are offering the KC-390 to Poland as both a transport aircraft and a tanker, which will benefit the platform.” He also noted that the lead time for aircraft delivery is typically around 30 months after the agreement is signed, but could be expedited depending on the customer’s specific requirements.
Compatibility with Polish Armed Forces Equipment
The KC-390 is capable of transporting various weapons systems currently utilized by the Polish Armed Forces, including the Waran wheeled tactical armored multi-purpose vehicle, the Rosomak wheeled armored personnel carrier, the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), and the UH-60 multirole helicopter.
Refueling Capabilities and Future Considerations
The KC-390 Millennium is also capable of refueling the FA-50PL using a probe and drogue system. However, the Polish Air Force’s primary combat aircraft, the F-16C/D Block 52+, and the future F-35A, utilize flying booms for air-to-air refueling.
Lemos noted, „We have received significant interest in the boom capability. We conducted a study with L3 in the past regarding this capability. We are now assessing the needs of various countries, particularly the US. A substantial initial order would be necessary to justify the development and implementation of a boom system on the KC-390.”
Commitment to Meeting Polish Air Force Needs
Embraer affirmed its dedication to fulfilling the requirements of the Polish Air Force, stating, „We are here to present ourselves and respond to the Polish Air Force’s request, and we want to be ready for that.”
