Defense Industry Veteran George Moutafis Takes the Helm

Fincantieri Marine Group, the American arm of Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has announced the appointment of George Moutafis as its new CEO. Moutafis, previously an executive with gunmaker Beretta USA, assumed the role on Tuesday, succeeding Marco Galbiati, who had served as CEO since July 2022.

Strategic Shift Amid Renewed Emphasis on Naval Capabilities

The leadership change occurs „at a pivotal moment for the U.S. shipbuilding industry, as the new U.S. administration places renewed strategic emphasis on strengthening domestic naval capabilities,” according to Fincantieri. The company emphasizes its long-term commitment to the United States by appointing a seasoned U.S. executive with extensive experience in defense, naval manufacturing, and international industrial transformation.

Navigating Challenges with the Constellation-Class Frigate

Moutafis will lead Fincantieri’s US business during a period of scrutiny for its largest Navy program, the Constellation-class frigate. The program has faced cost increases and schedule delays, prompting a senior Navy official to state that a decision on its continuation is pending with the administration.

Experienced Leader Returns to Fincantieri

A 25-year veteran of the defense industry, Moutafis most recently served as the chief operating officer and general manager for Beretta USA, a position he held since July 2023. Prior to that, he spent approximately a decade with Fincantieri in various roles, including chief strategy and transformation officer from 2022 to 2023 and vice president of programs from 2017 to 2022.
