Strengthening Defense Ties Between Indonesia and Turkey
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced his nation’s keen interest in participating in Turkey’s 5th-generation combat aircraft program, known as KAAN, following his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Thursday. „Indonesia wants to participate in the development of the ‘Kaan’ 5th-generation fighter jet and submarine development with the Turkish industry,” Subianto stated during a press conference, as reported by Indonesia’s Antara News Agency.
Background on the KAAN Program
The KAAN program is being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) as a strategic response to Turkey’s exclusion from the US F-35 program, which followed Ankara’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 air defense system. In response to Subianto’s comments, TAI declined to provide additional information to Breaking Defense.
During the joint press conference, Subianto emphasized the importance of fostering a closer partnership between Indonesia and Turkey, underlining the deepening ties between the two nations. On the same day, Indonesia and Turkey signed three agreements focused on culture, disaster management, and media, building on 13 previously signed agreements in February.
KAAN Program Milestones and Future Plans
TAI’s KAAN program successfully completed its maiden flight in February 2024, achieving an altitude of 8,000 feet and a speed of 230 knots. The company’s General Manager, Mehmet Demiroglu, announced plans for the second and third prototypes to „be flying by the end of the year and early next year,” with rigorous testing scheduled. Demiroglu aims to shorten the testing period to ensure the first production units can be delivered to the Turkish Air Force in the 2028-2029 timeframe.
Although Demiroglu indicated that several countries have shown interest in joining the KAAN program, he refrained from naming specifics, mentioning that such decisions require time and careful consideration. He expressed confidence that the KAAN initiative will ultimately evolve into a collaborative program involving multiple nations.
A Vision for Turkey’s Defense Industry
The development of a domestically produced, advanced fighter jet has been a significant goal for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has prioritized the nationalization of Turkey’s defense industry as a central aspect of his leadership. Described as a 5th-generation fighter with features of the 6th generation, KAAN is set to be a cutting-edge asset for Turkey’s military capabilities. Furthermore, Demiroglu noted that TAI is exploring a manned-unmanned teaming concept between KAAN and Baykar, a Turkish UAV manufacturer, pointing towards an innovative and integrated future for Turkish defense technology.
