Intuitive Machines, a lunar infrastructure firm, has announced its plan to acquire Lanteris Space Systems (formerly Maxar Space Systems) from Advent International for $800 million. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
From Moonshots to Satellites: A Strategic Expansion
The acquisition signals a significant shift for Intuitive Machines, moving beyond its core focus on lunar exploration towards the broader, and often more lucrative, market of satellite manufacturing, including applications for defense.
„This marks the moment Intuitive Machines transitions from a lunar company to a multi-domain space prime, setting the pace for how the industry’s next generation will operate,” said CEO Steve Altemus in the company’s press release.
Stepping Further into the Military Space Arena
While Intuitive Machines has primarily concentrated on NASA and commercial lunar initiatives, it has begun to make inroads into the military space sector. Most notably, the company secured contracts from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) under the Joint Emergent Technology Supplying On-orbit Nuclear Power (JETSON) program, aimed at developing nuclear fission reactors for satellites.
Lanteris: A Rebranded Satellite Powerhouse
Lanteris, previously known as Maxar Space Systems, was rebranded by Advent International on October 1st, widely interpreted as a prelude to its sale. Based in Palo Alto, California, Lanteris is a manufacturer of satellite systems. Lanteris’ „roadmap” includes as a first priority its business in national security and defense technology. The company also plays a role in building missile tracking satellites under contract with the Space Development Agency.
A Deal Driven by Private Equity
Advent International, like many private equity firms, specializes in acquiring, restructuring, and reselling companies. This acquisition is expected to be subject to regulatory approval.
