Regional Conflict Looms as Tensions Soar

Following Israel’s surprise overnight attack on Iran, analysts anticipate a series of retaliatory strikes between the two adversaries in the coming weeks. The overriding concern is preventing the conflict from escalating into a full-blown regional war.

„Rising Lion” Attack Targets Key Iranian Assets

Israel’s „Rising Lion” operation targeted Iranian nuclear sites, scientists, and military leaders, including the elimination of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) chief Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami and Iran’s armed forces Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri. Israeli media quoted an IDF spokesperson stating that 200 aircraft struck over 100 targets with more than 330 munitions.

Immediate Iranian Response

Iran swiftly retaliated, reportedly launching 100 drones to attack Israeli targets. „The [Israeli] regime must await a severe punishment,” threatened Islamic Revolution leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Experts Divided on Escalation Potential

Regional observers now expect a continued exchange of fire between the two sides. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, described Israel’s strike as „not merely a limited counter-proliferation operation but a larger series of attacks that targeted regime decision-makers and military planners.”

Defense expert and retired Lebanese armed forces general Naji Mlaeb believes Israel’s attack opened „hellfire upon itself,” but anticipates the conflict remaining relatively isolated. Retired Lebanese armed forces general Wehbe Katicha concurred, emphasizing that escalating the conflict and attacking US military bases in the region would not serve Iran’s interests, as it would likely draw the US into the conflict.

Concerns of a Wider War

However, Paul Salem, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, expressed less optimism, stating, „Yes, I do think like an all war [is possible].” He highlighted the role of unpredictability and uncertainty as key factors.

Iran’s Response: No Limits?

Iran’s semi-official press agency Tasnim reported that the general staff of Iranian armed forces said „there remains no limit to the scope of Iran’s response to the Zionist regime which has crossed all redlines by attacking the Islamic Republic,” potentially opening the door to attacks elsewhere in the region.

Regional Impact: Airspace Closures and Interceptions

The conflict has already impacted other countries. Iraq and Jordan closed their airspace, and Jordanian air defenses reportedly intercepted incoming Iranian munitions deemed a threat to Jordanian territory.

GCC Countries Unlikely Targets

Experts agree that attacks on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are unlikely. Bahrain-based strategic expert and political researcher Abdullah Al Junaid stated, „The GCC isn’t the weak link within the regional security structure, and Iran understands that very well.” He added that the GCC security apparatus will be on high alert, and Iran would prefer to keep the conflict contained between the two foes rather than escalate it into a wider conflict.
