Significant Acquisition Agreement

The Italian Army has officially placed an order for its first Skynex air defense system with Rheinmetall’s Italian branch, as part of a broader contract that includes the option to purchase up to three additional systems. This announcement was made by the manufacturer and highlights a strategic move within NATO.

Contract Details and Future Prospects

Rheinmetall indicated that the option for the additional systems could potentially be exercised in 2027, with the total value of the acquisition nearing €280 million ($289 million) if finalized. The initial pilot system has a contract value of €73 million and is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2026. The deal also encompasses related components such as ammunition, spare parts, training, and maintenance services.

First NATO Adoption of Skynex System

This acquisition marks a significant milestone as Italy becomes the first NATO country to adopt the Skynex air defense system. Rheinmetall highlighted this successful order as a crucial step in its strategy to establish a new standard for cannon-based air defense among international armed forces.

System Capabilities and Configuration

The Skynex system features an integrated sensor and tracking unit for air surveillance, a control station, and four Revolver Gun Mk3 35mm firing units. The automatic cannon offers a high rate of fire of 1,000 rounds per minute with an effective range of up to 4 kilometers. Italy has chosen the configuration equipped with the XTAR 3D radar from Rheinmetall, capable of monitoring airspace in a radius of up to 50 kilometers.

Operational Successes in Ukraine

The Skynex system is already being utilized by several countries, including Austria, Romania, Qatar, and most notably Ukraine. Rheinmetall reported that Skynex systems are demonstrating their effectiveness in protecting Ukrainian forces against airborne threats amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, achieving operational successes particularly against cruise missiles and drones.

Strengthening Defense Ties

The partnership between Rheinmetall and Italy is underscored by their collaborative efforts in heavy combat vehicle projects. In this context, Rheinmetall anticipates substantial orders related to Italy’s main battle tank and Lynx armored infantry combat system programs. This relationship continues to reinforce defense cooperation between the two entities, indicating a robust mutual commitment to enhancing military capabilities.
