In a series of significant moves, the White House has announced its nominations for several top military positions, signaling potential shifts in leadership across key commands. According to a Pentagon statement, the nominations include the next commander of US Strategic Command, a top Navy billet in Europe, and the second-most senior Marine Corps officer.
Correll to Lead US Strategic Command
Navy Vice Adm. Richard Correll has been tapped to take the helm of US Strategic Command, succeeding Air Force Gen. Anthony Cotton. Correll, a seasoned submariner currently serving as the deputy commander of US Strategic Command, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His previous commands include the Los Angeles-class submarine Topeka (SSN-754), Submarine Squadron 11, and Submarine Group 7. He has also held staff positions for senior Pentagon officials and the chief of naval operations.
Wikoff Nominated to Head US Naval Forces Europe and Africa
Vice Adm. George Wikoff has been nominated to become commander of US Naval Forces Europe and Africa, the Navy’s top operational officer in the region. Wikoff, a career aviator currently serving as the Navy’s 5th Fleet commander in the Middle East, has a distinguished background that includes a stint as a TOPGUN training officer and various positions with the Joint Staff. If confirmed, he will succeed Adm. Stuart Munsch.
Gering Set to Become Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps
Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Bradford Gering, the current deputy commandant for aviation, has been nominated to become the next assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, the service’s second-highest-ranking officer. Gering would take over from Gen. Christopher Mahoney, who has been nominated to become the next Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Other Key Nominations
- Rear Adm. Heidi Berg has been appointed to lead Fleet Cyber Command/US 10th Fleet/Navy Space Command.
- Army Lt. Gen. Michele H. Bredenkamp has been nominated to be the new director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), replacing Vice Adm. Frank “Trey” Whitworth. Bredenkamp is currently serving as an advisor on military affairs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. It’s worth noting that Whitworth recently faced criticism from MAGA influencer Laura Loomer, who publicly opposed a planned meeting between Whitworth and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner.
- Lt. Gen. David Miller was tapped as deputy chief of Space Operations for Strategy, Plans, Programs, and Requirements.
- Lt. Gen. Doug Schiess was nominated as deputy chief of Space Operations for Operations.
Correll, Wikoff, Gering, and Berg would all receive an additional star if their nominations are confirmed. These nominations highlight the ongoing process of leadership transition within the US military and reflect the Biden administration’s strategic priorities for national security.
