Sales Surge to $4.8 Billion in 2024, Highlighting Strong Demand for Israeli Defense Technologies

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has announced a remarkable 27 percent increase in sales for 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching $4.8 billion, with approximately half of the revenue coming from international customers. This surge reflects a notable spike in global interest in the company’s defense systems, particularly following recent operational experiences.

Yoav Tourgeman, CEO and president of Rafael, emphasized the importance of their systems in a statement to Breaking Defense. “Given the extensive operational experience in our systems, we saw some of these major systems receive even more attention globally,” he noted.

Record-Breaking Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter of 2024 marked Rafael’s strongest to date, with sales totaling $1.48 billion, up from $1.2 billion in the same quarter of 2023. The company secured approximately $3 billion in new orders during this period, reflecting robust demand for its advanced defense solutions.

Rafael is well-known for developing critical Israeli defense systems, including the Iron Dome air defense system and the Trophy Active Protection System (APS) for armored vehicles. Both systems have been in operational use with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for over a decade and have undergone numerous upgrades to counter evolving threats. Notably, the Iron Dome recently demonstrated its capabilities against various threats, including coordinated mock assaults involving multiple drones and rockets.

Preparing for Future Challenges

Tourgeman asserted the company’s commitment to anticipating future challenges, saying, “We have succeeded in foreseeing the challenges of tomorrow and developing the means to deal with them.” He highlighted the demand for battle-tested capabilities such as Iron Dome, Trophy APS, and the David’s Sling system.

Rafael’s success mirrors a broader trend within Israel’s defense industry, which has experienced significant achievements over the past year. Israel Aerospace Industries reported an order backlog of $25 billion and sales of $6.1 billion in 2024, marking its highest revenue year. Similarly, Elbit Systems announced revenues of $6.8 billion and a backlog of $22.6 billion for the same period.

Meeting Domestic and International Demand

The ongoing conflict following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has driven Israeli defense companies to prioritize supplying the IDF. Many firms have seen employees called to reserve duty and have expanded operational shifts to meet both wartime and international demands. In response, Rafael has recruited 1,800 new employees to enhance its production capacity amid surging demand.

To support its growth, Rafael has increased its research and development investment and expanded its footprint by opening a new facility in Hadera, complementing existing R&D centers in Be’er Sheva, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv.

In October 2024, Rafael signed an agreement with the Israeli Ministry of Defense for its Iron Beam laser defense system, slated for delivery in 2025. Additionally, the company highlighted its joint venture with Raytheon in the US, which includes a facility in Arkansas dedicated to producing Tamir interceptors for the Iron Dome.

As Rafael continues to lead the way in innovative defense solutions, its impressive sales growth underscores the critical role of Israeli defense technologies in addressing both current threats and future challenges on the global stage.
