Companies aim to provide layered defenses against small drones and cruise missiles.

Huntsville, Ala. – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and AeroVironment (AV) have announced a strategic partnership to jointly bid for the Pentagon’s Golden Dome project. The collaboration focuses on the lower tier of defense, targeting small drones and cruise missiles.

Layered Defenses for Critical Infrastructure

The teamup aims to deliver „comprehensive, layered defenses within [Golden Dome], that shield specific, limited-area, high-value locations, such as bases, ships, airfields or critical infrastructure.” The system is designed to extend its range as new sensors and interceptors, particularly from space, are integrated.

Technologies Encompass Passive, Active, and Cyber Solutions

The proposed technologies include „passive and active sensing, radio frequency, directed energy, kinetic energy, electronic warfare and cyber solutions.”

Golden Dome: A Trump Initiative

Golden Dome is a key initiative of President Donald Trump, envisioning an integrated air-and-missile defense network across the continental United States. Initial funding in the government’s reconciliation package is $25 billion, with Trump estimating a total cost of $175 billion, although experts predict it could be significantly higher.

Industry Leaders Highlight Innovation and Collaboration

Wahid Nawabi, CEO of AV, emphasized the rapid deployment of affordable defensive solutions, ensuring „unmatched limited area ‘under-dome’ protection for critical U.S. infrastructure.” SNC CEO Fatih Ozmen likened the project’s scale to the Manhattan Project, requiring „industry ingenuity and collaboration” to protect the homeland from complex threats.

Golden Dome a Sensitive Topic at Symposium

The announcement coincides with the annual Space and Missile Defense symposium in Huntsville, Ala., where Golden Dome has been a sensitive topic. Sources indicated that the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s public relations team restricted Defense Department officials and military personnel from openly discussing the project.
