HADES Program Aims to Provide Advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Capabilities
Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has announced the arrival of the second aircraft slated for conversion into a prototype of the Army’s High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System (HADES). This initiative is designed to create the service’s next-generation high-altitude intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft.
Rapid Configurability for Global Deployment
„SNC’s HADES solution emphasizes rapid configurability, allowing the aircraft to be swiftly tailored to meet specific reconnaissance mission requirements,” stated Tim Harper, vice president of business development at SNC. He added that this capability enables the HADES jets to be deployed anywhere in the world within 24 hours, offering substantial improvements in speed, range, payload, and endurance for the Army’s aerial ISR efforts.
Lead Integrator Role
SNC is responsible for converting the Global 6500 long-range business jet into a surveillance platform prototype. The company secured its position as the lead integrator for HADES last year, winning a 12-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity Army contract valued at nearly $1 billion.
Army’s First Large-Cabin ISR Jets
According to the company, „Using government-furnished Bombardier Global 6500 jets, the HADES prototypes will be the first Army-owned, large-cabin business jets utilized as aerial ISR platforms. The primary purpose of the aircraft is to provide advanced, deep-sensing capabilities for multi-domain operations against peer and near-peer adversaries. This system will give the Army enhanced and persistent deep sensing capabilities — flying higher, faster and farther.”
Acquisition Plans in Flux
While the Army initially planned to acquire up to 12 HADES aircraft, acquisition adjustments driven by the Army Transformation Initiative may reduce the order to six, Breaking Defense reported in May. Army officials have indicated their goal to have an initial aircraft ready for service by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Operations and Synergies
SNC will primarily conduct its HADES operations at its facilities in Hagerstown, Md. The company is also leveraging synergies with its ATHENA-S program, converting two Bombardier Global 6500s into „ISR-as-a-service” platforms.
Josh Walsh, SNC vice president of mission solutions and operations, stated that SNC intends to reuse „about 90 percent” of the ATHENA-S engineering package for the HADES offering.
