Hyundai Rotem and Rafael Forge Alliance
In a move to bolster the defenses of its K2 Main Battle Tank, South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) has inked a teaming agreement with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The partnership aims to equip the K2 with Rafael’s battle-proven Trophy Active Protection System (APS).
Comprehensive Agreement
The agreement, finalized at the MSPO conference in Poland, encompasses not only the integration of the Trophy APS but also its production, marketing, localization, and comprehensive lifecycle support. This signals a long-term commitment to enhancing the tank’s survivability.
Statements from the Top
Tzvi Marmor, Rafael’s executive vice president, emphasized the shared dedication to „advancing battlefield survivability for next-generation armored platforms.” He expressed pride in deepening collaboration with Hyundai Rotem, combining Rafael’s combat experience with Korea’s technological prowess.
Hyung-Joon Jo, senior vice president at Hyundai Rotem, highlighted Trophy’s potential to „enhance the protection of the K2 main battle tank.”
Proven Track Record
The Trophy APS has been a mainstay on Israeli tanks for over a decade, demonstrating its effectiveness in recent conflicts. It has also been integrated into the US Abrams and German Leopard 2 tanks, attesting to its versatility.
Expanding Cooperation
This deal builds on a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two companies. A Rafael spokesperson noted that the agreement will make Trophy available for the K2 tanks Poland is acquiring, while also facilitating the development of Trophy for South Korea.
Strategic Implications
The partnership underscores the growing defense investments of both Korea and Poland. The Rafael spokesperson emphasized Korea’s importance as a key ally with significant potential for industrial cooperation.
Korean APS Development
A Rafael official revealed that the partnership extends to the development of a Korean APS based on the Trophy system. Certain components will be designed and manufactured in South Korea to meet the specific requirements of the K2 tank and future platforms.
