A new partnership promises to redefine military and commercial shipbuilding in America.

Two major players in the naval industry, HII from the United States and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) from South Korea, have announced a memorandum of understanding aimed at a strategic collaboration for the US Navy’s auxiliary shipbuilding programs. The announcement, cited by HII executive Eric Chewning, marks „the beginning of deeper collaboration” between the two companies and their countries, with the goal of bringing „enduring changes to military and commercial shipbuilding in America.”

A Strategic Alliance for the Future Logistics of the US Navy

One of the first joint projects is to pursue the design contract for the US Navy’s next-generation logistics ship. According to Naval Sea Systems Command, this ship will be smaller than current platforms and will have the ability to refuel, rearm, and resupply the fleet in „contested and non-contested environments.” The Navy plans to acquire 13 of these ships starting in fiscal year 2028.

Significant Investments and Promising Prospects

The service recently received $100 million for advance procurement funding, according to the Congressional Research Service. Previously, the Navy awarded industry study contracts to Austal USA, Bollinger Shipyards, and TAI Engineers to inform the new ship’s costs and capabilities. These companies could be potential competitors for the program of record.

Korean Technology and American Competitiveness: A Powerful Synergy

HHI President Joo Won-ho emphasized that „through joint participation in U.S. Navy procurement programs and investments aimed at establishing ship production bases in the United States, the two nations’ key industries are taking a major step toward deeper strategic collaboration.” He is confident that this partnership will generate „powerful synergies by combining Korea’s cutting-edge shipbuilding technologies with the U.S. defense sector’s strong market competitiveness.”

A Trend Encouraged by the „Maritime Statecraft” Initiative

This announcement comes amid a series of engagements between the United States, its shipbuilding industrial base, and their counterparts in South Korea and Japan. This trend was initiated by former Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro under the Biden administration through an initiative called „maritime statecraft.” This initiative aims to strengthen alliances and stimulate innovation in the naval field.
