The Indian defense market, traditionally resistant to foreign investment, is experiencing a boost from fresh US defense technology thanks to a new partnership with Shield AI, a leading AI and drone company.

JSW Group, a pan-industrial Indian conglomerate, has established a joint venture with Shield AI, committing approximately $90 million over the next two years to construct a facility, secure intellectual property rights, and train employees. This initiative aims to manufacture the V-BAT, Shield’s vertical takeoff and landing drone, in India, alongside providing support and maintenance services.

A press release from Shield AI highlights that JSW’s investment will enable the establishment of a local supply chain and the creation of an advanced manufacturing, assembly, and testing facility for the V-BAT aircraft, which is currently utilized by the US Marines.

This agreement aligns with India’s broader Atmanirbharta initiative, designed to encourage foreign companies to collaborate within India rather than simply exporting weapons to the country. This effort includes an investment fund aimed at attracting innovative and smaller companies, indicated on the initiative’s webpage featuring the drone deal.

The Indian Ministry of Defense stated in an October 24 press release regarding Atmanirbharta that India, once heavily reliant on foreign suppliers for defense, has shifted to prioritize self-sufficient manufacturing to fulfill its security requirements. The report notes that while India previously imported 65-70% of its defense equipment, the situation has improved dramatically, with about 65% now being manufactured domestically. Furthermore, 21% of this production stems from the private sector, significantly enhancing India’s journey toward self-reliance.

According to Shield AI, this partnership positions India as a global production hub for the San Diego-based firm, allowing for both domestic and international sales and maintenance. The companies assert that this collaboration will diminish reliance on external sources and ensure consistent supply to India’s Armed Forces.

The agreement signifies a major advancement in enhancing India’s defense capabilities by introducing world-class unmanned aerial system (UAS) technology into the country.

Brandon Tseng, co-founder of Shield AI and a former Navy SEAL, noted in the release, “JSW recognizes what Shield AI understands: that Group 3 UAS drones like the V-BAT can fulfill many of the same missions as more expensive helicopters and larger Group 5 UAS drones at a fraction of the cost. As the market transitions from costly, sophisticated aircraft to swarms of lower-cost, AI-controlled UAS drones, this partnership builds upon Shield AI’s robust US investments, enhances global distribution, and facilitates ongoing expansion of US operations.”

Sarjan Shah, Shield AI’s managing director for India, remarked that the collaboration with JSW Group “has been developed over several years to enhance the depth, scale, and range of India’s indigenous capabilities in military unmanned systems.”
