First Public Showcase at LIMA Exhibition
Turkish defense contractor STM unveiled a model of its new Multi-Role Support Ship (MRSS) for the first time in Malaysia during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA). The vessel is designed to enhance amphibious operations by providing logistical support, armored unit transportation, and search and rescue capabilities, tailored specifically for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
A Versatile Vessel Tailored for Malaysian Needs
STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz highlighted that the 153-meter (roughly 500-foot) MRSS can carry up to 650 personnel, 14 main battle tanks, nine armored amphibious vehicles, and two helicopters each weighing up to 15 tons. It is equipped with a main gun, four remote-controlled weapon systems, and two decoy launchers, underscoring its combat and support versatility.
Building on a Growing Defense Partnership
The introduction of the MRSS comes shortly after Malaysia awarded STM a contract for three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) under the second batch (LMSB2), based on the Ada-class corvette design. Construction of the first LMS began in December 2024 and is scheduled for completion by 2027, demonstrating Malaysia’s continued investment in Turkish naval technology.
Showcasing a Range of Capabilities
During the four-day LIMA event, STM is also presenting models of six other naval platforms and tactical mini-unmanned aerial vehicles, including the KARGU combat drone and TOGAN surveillance drone. Notably, the Turkish Navy’s TCG BÜYÜKADA (F-512) corvette has arrived in Malaysia for the exhibition, emphasizing the strategic partnership between Turkey and Malaysia.
Implications for Regional Naval Capabilities
The debut of the MRSS model signals STM’s intent to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia by offering versatile, locally tailored naval support vessels. With ongoing projects and new platforms on display, STM aims to strengthen its position as a leading regional provider of advanced naval solutions.
