The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale of Bell 412EPX and Bell 407M helicopters to Iraq in a deal valued at approximately $800 million.
The proposed sale, which does not specify the exact number of aircraft, is intended to strengthen Iraq’s ability to respond to current and future threats. According to the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, the package would improve Iraq’s rotary-wing transport, reconnaissance and air-to-surface targeting capabilities.
The Deal Is Not Yet Final
The details of the proposed transaction remain subject to change. The number of helicopters and the final value of the agreement could be adjusted as negotiations continue.
US lawmakers could also block or modify the agreement before the foreign military sale process is completed.
In addition to the helicopters, the package would include:
- GAU-19 three-barrel machine guns;
- M260 seven-tube rocket launchers;
- 2.75-inch rockets;
- Wescam MX-15HDI electro-optical and infrared sensors;
- missile launch detection systems;
- radios;
- spare parts;
- ground-based support and maintenance equipment.
Bell Textron, based in Texas, would serve as the primary contractor for the potential deal.
Two Helicopter Types, Different Capabilities
The Bell 412EPX is a twin-engine helicopter primarily designed for transport and support missions. The aircraft can be used for firefighting, law enforcement and medical operations.
The Bell 407M is intended for armed reconnaissance and light-attack missions. It can support ground forces by observing the battlefield, identifying targets and employing onboard weapons.
The Bell 412EPX would be a new platform for the Iraqi armed forces. The Bell 407M, by contrast, would join an existing fleet of Bell helicopters already operated by Iraq.
Political and Security Context
The announcement comes two months after Iraq declared its intention to disarm Iran-affiliated militias operating in the country. The groups were given until September 30 to surrender their weapons.
The notification also follows a visit to Washington by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi approximately one month ago. Discussions reportedly focused on major economic partnerships and regional security concerns.
Against that backdrop, expanding Iraq’s military aviation capabilities could provide Baghdad with additional tools for monitoring its territory, transporting forces and conducting operations against internal and regional threats.
A New Step for Iraq’s Military Aviation
If approved and finalized, the agreement would expand Iraq’s capabilities in tactical transport, armed reconnaissance and close air support.
The acquisition of a platform already present in Iraq’s inventory, such as the Bell 407M, could simplify integration with forces familiar with Bell helicopters. The Bell 412EPX would add a twin-engine capability for logistical, medical and support missions.
The deal would be conducted through the US foreign military sales system for allies and partners. However, its final value and configuration will depend on negotiations between Washington and Baghdad, as well as approval by the US Congress.
