Ankara Seeks Stronger Defense Cooperation and Diplomatic Solutions to Regional Conflicts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Turkey’s Ambassador to the United States, Sedat Önal, expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral relations with the US under a renewed engagement, highlighting potential for increased cooperation across multiple fronts. Speaking at an Atlantic Council event, Önal emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration to address ongoing global conflicts.

Strengthening Defense Cooperation Amidst Sanctions:

Önal underscored the significance of defense and security cooperation, particularly in the current geopolitical climate. While acknowledging the existing „strategic mechanism” framework, he stressed Ankara’s desire to bolster this relationship by working towards the removal of US sanctions. This, he argued, would pave the way for closer defense cooperation between the two NATO allies, with plans for high-level engagements in the near future. The ambassador’s comments come against the backdrop of past sanctions imposed on Turkey following its acquisition of the Russian S-400 air defense system, an action that also led to Turkey’s removal from the F-35 program. Although a deal for F-16 fighter jets was initially stalled, it was later unfrozen by the Biden administration.

Turkey’s Role in Regional Conflicts:

Önal outlined Turkey’s proactive role in mediating regional conflicts. Regarding the war in Ukraine, he highlighted Turkey’s commitment to facilitating a diplomatic solution, prioritizing a ceasefire followed by negotiations. He also emphasized Turkey’s efforts in Gaza, aiming for a sustainable ceasefire and an end to the humanitarian crisis, reiterating Turkey’s support for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

On the Syrian conflict, Önal advocated for lifting sanctions against Damascus, arguing that their continued imposition hinders the government’s ability to provide essential services and security to its people, effectively punishing the Syrian population for the Assad regime’s actions.

Expert Opinion Underscores Potential for Cooperation:

Alper Coşkun, a former diplomat and senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, echoed Önal’s sentiments, noting the broad range of potential areas for US-Turkey cooperation. However, he cautioned that the success of these efforts hinges on mutual respect for national interests and a recognition of existential threats. The „devil,” he stated, „will be in the details.”

A Look Ahead:

Ambassador Önal concluded by expressing confidence in the future of US-Turkey relations, suggesting that genuine effort, mutual understanding of sensitivities, and open dialogue are key ingredients for a successful and strengthened partnership.
