In a move signaling closer alignment with the United States, Argentina’s Defense Minister Luis Petri finalized a deal for 8×8 M1126 Stryker infantry fighting vehicles during a recent visit to Washington, D.C. This agreement, coupled with last year’s acquisition of American-made F-16 fighter jets, is seen by analysts as a strategic strengthening of US-Argentine relations, particularly as China seeks to expand its influence in the region.
A Long Time Coming: Why the Rush Now?
Ryan Berg, director of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that these agreements have been long-promised, raising questions about the timing. „We have to ask ourselves why it took so long,” Berg stated, suggesting that concerns over a potential Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 fighter jet sale to Argentina may have spurred Washington into action.
Modernizing Argentina’s Military: The Stryker Advantage
The acquisition of the Strykers will enable the Argentine Army to modernize its armored vehicle fleet, currently relying on aging M113 A1/A2 platforms and domestically manufactured TAM VCTP infantry combat vehicles. While the exact number of Strykers to be transferred remains unclear, the Argentine Army stated that a delegation inspected eight vehicles in June, emphasizing the Strykers’ role in building a more modern, interoperable force with enhanced power-projection capabilities.
Air Power Arrives: F-16s on the Horizon
The Stryker deal follows Argentina’s purchase of 24 used F-16 warplanes from the Royal Danish Air Force. Minister Petri, after inspecting the warplanes in Copenhagen, expressed confidence in their capabilities, stating, „The F-16 that we saw in Denmark and that will arrive in our country in December are real air power.” Six F-16s are expected to arrive in Argentina by the end of the year.
A Budding Partnership: Strengthening Ties with Washington
„Our relationship is at its best point, and our partnership will continue to grow in all areas of government, but fundamentally in defense,” Minister Petri stated during his visit to Washington. This sentiment is echoed by analysts who see these acquisitions as a clear signal of President Javier Milei’s commitment to strengthening ties with the US.
China’s Ambitions Thwarted: A Win for Washington
This burgeoning partnership between Buenos Aires and Washington comes at the expense of Beijing, which has been actively pursuing arms sales in Latin America. China’s attempts to sell WMZ-551B1 armored vehicles and JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to Argentina ultimately failed, highlighting Washington’s determination to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
Security in the Southern Cone: Addressing Transnational Threats
Beyond geopolitical considerations, Argentina faces pressing security challenges, including transnational criminal organizations, drug smuggling, and illegal fishing. The acquired F-16s will enhance Argentina’s ability to combat drug trafficking and protect its sovereignty, while improved naval capabilities are needed to monitor distant-water fishing fleets operating in the South Atlantic.
