The Israeli Ministry of Defense recently unveiled significant defense acquisition plans, signaling a major effort to enhance the country’s military capabilities in the wake of recent conflicts. The plans include the acquisition of two additional KC-46 refueling tankers, a substantial investment in armored vehicles, and the purchase of thousands of first-person-view (FPV) unmanned aerial vehicles.
More Tankers for Long-Range Missions
The ministry announced that it would sign a contract with Boeing for the new KC-46 refuelers, pending approval from the Israel Defense Procurement Ministerial Committee. These aircraft, equipped with Israeli systems, will bolster the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) ability to conduct long-range missions, vital for conflicts on multiple fronts. Israel has relied on aging Boeing 707s for such missions, including strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen and a 12-day war against Iran, requiring roundtrip flights of 2,000 miles. The $500 million contract is funded through US financial aid.
Investing in Armored Vehicle Production
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Director General Maj. Gen. Amir Baram presented a 5 billion shekel ($1.5 billion USD) investment plan to accelerate the production of Israeli armored vehicles. This initiative, known as the Armored Vehicle Acceleration Project, aims to increase the capacity of Israeli armored vehicle production by dozens of tanks and APCs over the next five years. The project will focus on supplying the IDF with more Merkava IV Barak tanks, as well as Namer and Eitan APCs. The Eitans will be equipped with 30mm cannons.
Addressing Strain on Reserve System
The investment in more tanks comes as the IDF calls up 60,000 reservists for a new offensive in Gaza. The IDF armored corps has been heavily involved in the war, straining the reserve system.
Strengthening Domestic Production
The accelerated armored vehicle program will run in parallel with an expansion of domestic production infrastructure, a strategy aimed at bolstering the defense-industrial base. This involves expanding production in industries across Israel that contribute to the Merkava program, many of which are located in peripheral regions.
Enhancing Ground Forces with FPV Drones
The ministry is also investing millions of dollars in thousands of FPV drones manufactured by XTEND. These drones, equipped with advanced technology, are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Ground Forces. They will be delivered to the IDF in the coming months, accompanied by comprehensive training programs.
