A significant new chapter in defense technology manufacturing has opened with the announcement of a joint venture between the US defense tech firm Anduril and UAE-based EDGE Group. The newly formed entity, named the EDGE-Anduril Production Alliance, aims to establish a cutting-edge hub for drone manufacturing and sustainment in the Middle East, with ambitions to serve both military and commercial sectors. The alliance has already secured initial orders for its first product.
A Strategic Partnership Driven by Shared Vision
The collaboration stems from a mutual commitment to rapidly field modern defense systems at scale, according to Shane Arnott, Anduril’s Senior Vice President for Maneuver Dominance. Arnott highlighted EDGE’s prominence as a „main player” in the UAE’s defense technology landscape, emphasizing the strategic synergy. Troy Lambeth, an executive with EDGE, conveyed enthusiasm for the long-term potential, stating, „We see a long skyline of expanding that relationship together in a number of exciting areas over time. We’re very excited about this new partnership with Anduril.”
Introducing Omen: A Game-Changing Tailsitter Drone
The first product to emerge from this alliance is the Omen, a mid-size tailsitter drone. This innovative unmanned aerial system (UAS) uniquely takes off and lands on its tail before transitioning to efficient horizontal flight, much like an airplane. Arnott described the Omen as being approximately 10 feet tall when vertical, placing it at the upper end of the FAA’s Group 3 classification (which covers systems with a maximum gross takeoff weight ranging from 55 to 1300 pounds).
The Omen aims to fill a „blank spot in the market” for drones with its specific payload capacity, positioning itself to disrupt roles traditionally reserved for much larger aircraft such as maritime patrol and special mission jets. The development overcame initial propulsion constraints through the integration of hybrid electric options, pioneered via a partnership with Archer Aviation, enabling crucial runway-independent operations. The aircraft is designed for dual-use, serving both defense and commercial applications, with applicable US and UAE export controls if military mission systems are equipped.
Significant Investment and a Clear Production Roadmap
Manufacturing of the Omen drone is „very likely” to take place at an EDGE facility in the UAE through the joint venture, according to Arnott. EDGE plans to invest $200 million in its manufacturing capabilities for the Omen, building on a substantial $850 million that Anduril has already internally spent on the platform. The two companies aim to move the Omen into „full rate production by the end of 2028.”
The UAE has already placed an order for 50 Omen aircraft, though the specifics of the deal remain undisclosed. While local orders and those from „other allies” will be fulfilled at the joint facility in the UAE, any potential US orders for the Omen would be manufactured at Anduril’s „Arsenal” factory in Ohio. Arnott noted that the Omen features a „scalable architecture,” suggesting future variants, but for now, only this specific configuration has been announced. This ambitious partnership signifies a bold step forward in autonomous defense solutions, poised to make a considerable impact on global markets.
