The Pentagon and the United States Air Force have long proclaimed artificial intelligence (AI) a strategic necessity, with ambitious visions to integrate thousands of AI-driven “loyal wingman” aircraft designed to support, rather than fully replace, human pilots. While the industry demonstrates the technological capability for fully autonomous flight, a central question persists: should the Pentagon focus on augmenting human pilots or replacing them entirely?

A Debate Trapped in Past Paradigms?

An innovative perspective, articulated by aerospace engineering experts, suggests that both current approaches are limited by traditional thinking, hindering a complete vision for the future. Advocates for human pilots highlight the absence of „immediate human judgment” in an AI system, emphasizing vulnerabilities to jamming or hacking. They caution that even the most sophisticated AI is limited by its training data set and may fail in unforeseen situations or completely ignore unrecognized elements – unacceptable behavior in a close combat support role.

Conversely, proponents of pilotless aircraft emphasize the costs and risks associated with training and maintaining human pilots. An „AI pilot” is trained once, and the aircraft no longer requires costly modifications to accommodate a human. Without a pilot in the cockpit, dangerous missions can be undertaken without loss of human life. While a layered approach, combining manned and unmanned aircraft, appears to be the Pentagon’s pragmatic direction, the true innovation lies beyond this dichotomy.

Unleashed from Biological Limits: A New Aerodynamics

The true power of pilotless aircraft lies not in the absence of a pilot, but in the radically new design possibilities that this freedom unlocks. Imagine an autonomous aircraft, engineered to execute 20G maneuvers, far exceeding the 7.5G limit of a human pilot in an F-18. What would a mission profile look like with such a capability?

Runway dependence is a vulnerability. A solution could be a 10G vertical launch canister using a cheap solid rocket motor, returning to a capture net – an „AI air base” that could be established anywhere in about a day. Furthermore, an aircraft designed from the ground up without a human pilot could use solid rocket motors for high-G vertical takeoffs that a pilot couldn’t handle, thus eliminating the need for a large fuel load for takeoff. Even hypersonic transit to the mission area in just five minutes, propelled by the same solid rocket motor, becomes a reality.

The potential to expand the naval arsenal from 90 aircraft to 900 or even 2,000 small, vertical takeoff units, eliminating the need for runway space, would rapidly amplify deployment speed across regions, without requiring additional, costly aircraft carriers.

Aerial Synergies: Redefining Battlefield Roles

This logical approach suggests that the ultimate answer for the Department of Defense may not necessarily be the „loyal wingman” model currently favored, but rather separate roles within an air campaign for manned and unmanned aircraft. Simply put, an air campaign generally has three primary objectives:

  1. Establishing Air Dominance at the very beginning of a conflict, destroying the enemy’s air force.
  2. Strategic Strikes that can reach deep into enemy territory, disrupting their ability to support the front.
  3. Supporting Ground Troops with close combat air support, search and rescue operations, etc.

Initial air dominance and strategic strikes are obvious applications for AI aircraft. The mission would be simple: eliminate everything flying, communicating, or shooting in the air, and neutralize enemy assets on the ground. This airspace is heavily defended and dangerous. High-speed, maneuverable, and heavily armed AI planes could launch unexpectedly from covert sites, aggressively attack, and quickly dominate without the loss of any US personnel.

Maintaining air control would subsequently shift to piloted aircraft, as would close combat support for ground troops. The flexibility, judgment, and reliability of human pilots excel in these complex roles.

This disruptive vision, a powerful combination of technologies, promises to shorten conflicts, reduce loss of life, and ultimately deter their onset.
