Australia is taking a decisive step towards bolstering its defense capabilities, aiming to localize the sustainment for its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) fleet. This strategic initiative, spearheaded by Lockheed Martin Australia in partnership with Rheinmetall Defence Australia, promises to transform the nation’s military industrial landscape by ensuring critical maintenance occurs on home soil.

A Strategic Alliance for Key Technology

The collaboration between Lockheed Martin Australia and Rheinmetall Defence Australia is exploring extensive opportunities at Rheinmetall’s military vehicle production and sustainment facilities. The assessment focuses on how existing infrastructure and specialized expertise can be aligned to deliver a robust, Australian-based sustainment model for HIMARS.

Rheinmetall’s Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence (MILVECHOE) in Queensland, alongside established facilities in South Australia, could play a central role in this complex support network. These locations might handle heavy-grade repair and specialist maintenance for Australian HIMARS vehicles, complementing depot-level and unit-level sustainment activities already in place in South Australia.

Boosting the National Defense Industrial Base

This potential collaboration represents a major opportunity to deepen Australia’s expertise in heavy vehicle maintenance and complex systems sustainment. Through this move, the nation aims to significantly broaden its defense industrial base, aligning with the Australian Government’s Sovereign Defence Industrial Priority 3, which focuses on the sustainment and enhancement of the combined-arms land system.

This strategic decision follows recent announcements, including one last December, that Lockheed Martin’s production facilities in South Australia have already manufactured the first Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) guided rockets. This highlights existing capabilities and the potential for growth within the defense sector.

Long-Term Commitment: HIMARS Fleet and the Future of Precision

Australia has acquired 42 HIMARS launch vehicles under its Project Land 8113 Long Range Fires Program and has requested an additional 48 vehicles for September 2025, demonstrating a long-term commitment to this crucial platform. The country is also actively contributing to the development of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) with the United States, solidifying its position at the forefront of precision strike technology.

MILVECHOE, inaugurated in mid-2020 with an investment of approximately AUD 170 million, is already a cornerstone of the defense industry, delivering updated Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles for the LAND 400 Phase 2 effort. Expanding its role to HIMARS sustainment marks a deep integration of national capabilities into the global supply and maintenance chain.
